About <strong>the</strong> Speaker<br />

Dr. Randi Zlotnik Shaul is a bioethicist <strong>at</strong> The Hospital for Sick Children in<br />

<strong>Toronto</strong>. In th<strong>at</strong> role she provides ethics consult<strong>at</strong>ion services and policy<br />

support to individuals and committees within <strong>the</strong> hospital, teaches<br />

health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and bioethics students, and conducts bioethics<br />

research. Randi is an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Paedi<strong>at</strong>rics<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toronto</strong>, has an appointment in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Surgery and is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toronto</strong>’s Joint Centre for<br />

Bioethics. Randi has a degree in political science from McGill University, a<br />

law degree from Osgoode Hall, and both a Master <strong>of</strong> Law degree and a<br />

Ph.D. in bioethics from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toronto</strong>. Before gradu<strong>at</strong>e school,<br />

Randi practiced law <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ontario Ministry <strong>of</strong> Health. She has published<br />

in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> health law, priority setting, accountability and research<br />

ethics. Randi has presented <strong>at</strong> conferences both n<strong>at</strong>ionally and intern<strong>at</strong>ionally.<br />

She has been an active member <strong>of</strong> The Hospital for Sick<br />

Children's Research Ethics Board for almost 9 years. Randi’s current<br />

research interests include <strong>the</strong> interface <strong>of</strong> law and ethics in clinical and<br />

research based accountability and <strong>the</strong> introduction <strong>of</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>the</strong>rapies<br />

in health care institutions. She is currently a PI on a CIHR funded<br />

grant looking <strong>at</strong> issues <strong>of</strong> dual accountability for clinician-researchers.<br />

About <strong>the</strong> Program<br />

on sound ground and consider <strong>the</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial to be discussed in this program<br />

before you jump in. This session will address <strong>the</strong> law and ethics<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> topics <strong>of</strong> performing innov<strong>at</strong>ive procedures and standards<br />

for informed consent in Ontario.<br />

Participants can expect to:<br />

● understand when it is legally and ethically defensible to try a procedure<br />

for <strong>the</strong> first time<br />

● be able to develop an innov<strong>at</strong>ion guideline for <strong>the</strong>ir own practices<br />

● Understand <strong>the</strong> legal and ethical standards for valid informed consents<br />

About <strong>the</strong> Speaker<br />

Dr. Klaiman gradu<strong>at</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toronto</strong>’s Faculty <strong>of</strong><br />

Dentistry in 1985 and received his Certific<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Advance Gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Studies in Prosthodontics from <strong>the</strong> Goldman School <strong>of</strong> Gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Dentistry, Boston University. Dr. Klaiman has a part-time teaching<br />

appointment <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toronto</strong> where he serves as a clinical<br />

instructor for <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics. He has also held executive<br />

positions for <strong>the</strong> Ontario Associ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Dental Specialists, Ontario<br />

Study Club <strong>of</strong> Osseointegr<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>Toronto</strong> Dental Seminars, and The<br />

Associ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics <strong>of</strong> Ontario. Dr. Klaiman maintains a full<br />

time specialty practice in fixed and removeable prosthodontics in<br />

<strong>Toronto</strong>.<br />

About <strong>the</strong> Program<br />

The placement <strong>of</strong> dental implants is now in common use in a restor<strong>at</strong>ive/prosthodontic<br />

practice. In many instances <strong>the</strong> replacement <strong>of</strong> questionable<br />

teeth with dental implants is <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> art for many<br />

p<strong>at</strong>ients. The anterior zone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oral cavity requires optimum diagnosing<br />

and tre<strong>at</strong>ment planning particularly for p<strong>at</strong>ients with a high smile<br />

line. This present<strong>at</strong>ion will present a concise review <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liter<strong>at</strong>ure to<br />

show <strong>the</strong> evidence to support this topic.<br />
