MEDIATIONS REPORT Gilbert Chapnick, D.D.S. The Toronto Academy continues to assist the four Toronto ODA component societies with administrative assistance in the mediation process. Each society appoints a mediation committee of at least three members chaired by a senior member of the committee. When a written concern is raised by a patient and brought forth through the ODA process, the issue is investigated by the commitee of the members component society. The Academy assists in all aspects of the dispute with regards to phone calls, release of information, consent, gathering of details and letters and documentation. The process strictly follows the guidelines established by the ODA and is running smoothly thanks to the dedicated committee members and the Academy staff. Within the last year approximately 20 written complaints have been reviewed most having been resolved satisfactorily. Good communication, good records and offering treatment within the capabiltites and qualifications of the practitioner will help to ensure a satisfied patient and avoid the stress of mediation that sometimes becomes necessary despite our best efforts. Sometimes a complaint is registered without anticipation, however often times it is possible to recognize an unhappy patient before a complaint is initiated and for these times it is important to seek advice early from the many resources available to us in an attempt to avoid an escalating situation. Chairman, Mediations Committee Toronto Academy of Dentistry You’ve Helped Us Help Others The Toronto Community Professional Dental Association was incorporated in 1994, and was created to be utilized for charitable donations only, a commitment the Academy is honoured to be a part of. Requests for funding must be formally submitted to the Academy office no later than November 15th of each year. Past endowments include Easter Seal Society, Ontario March of Dimes, University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry’s Paediatric Clinic, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Daily Bread Food Bank, Kid’s Help Phoneline, Women in Transition, Hospital for Sick Children, About Face, Children’s Aid Foundation, and Bloorview MacMillan Children’s Foundation. In 2009, recipients from the fund are: Children’s Aid Foundation/Academy’s Dental Fund U of T Faculty of Dentistry Research Program About Face The Academy gratefully acknowledges the much appreciated support of both the dental profession and the dental industry. For the past five years the members of the Academy have participated at the Annual Teddy Bear Affair raising additional funds for the Children’s Aid Foundation. Each Year the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry, awards prizes donated by the Toronto Academy of Dentistry The awards are given to outstanding students in the Departments of Paedodontics (4th Year), and in Community Dentistry (3rd Year) The Winners for 2008-2009: Ms Heather Jones 4th year and Ms Michelle Wong 3rd year Congratulations!! w w w . t o r d e n t . c o m 52
Toronto Academy of Dentistry Service Award Recipient Arthur Zwingenberger Arthur and his wife Dagmar live in Lucerne, Switzerland. His daughter Allison is a professor of radiology for Veterinary medicine at the University of California at Davis. His son Andrew is an economist with an MBA in international marketing from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Andrew is working in the family business, SciCan Ltd., and is presently expanding the medical division on an international basis. SciCan Ltd. was founded in 1957 by Arthur’s father Arno Zwingenberger. The company was a Canadian distributor of medical and dental products imported from around the world. After finishing his MBA in economics at U of T, Arthur joined his father with the vision of expanding the dental activities of Lux and Zwingenberger Ltd., as the company was called in those days. Arno Zwingenberger passed away in 1975, and Arthur has been guiding the firm ever since. In the late eighties SciCan Ltd. began to morph into the manufacturer and exporter of highly innovative Statim rapid sterilization technology ,which made routine sterilization of ALL instruments in the dental office possible. Statim has become a household word in dental offices but also in Ophthalmic suites, cosmetic surgical suites and in OR’s for rapid reprocessing. Statim is sold in 92 countries around the world. Machine washing of soiled instruments has been SciCan‘s preoccupation for the last 5 years, and is now becoming the new standard in many jurisdictions. Hydrim is the way to disinfect and wash instruments before sterilization without risk to the dental assistant, and makes validation of the process possible. SciCan’s latest entry in the infection control range of products is Optim, the buffered hydrogen peroxide family of disinfectants, which leave no toxic residues and have extremely high efficacy ratings. As much as Arthur identifies the milestones in his career with the products brought to market, he never loses sight of the fact that the key to these company achievements has been the team at SciCan that has developed these products, makes them to exacting quality standards and provides service and consulting to our clients. Our latest achievement in providing value to our dental customer base are the lectures we put on with our dealers, making sense of the complex regulatory environment surrounding infection control , and helping the staff to develop routines to protect patients, staff and practitioner, all the while making sure that the practice is prepared against legal claims. We look forward to continued challenges in the dental environment, which we will try to master with our wonderful team at SciCan, and with continued close contact with our dental customer base which has been an inspiration for 50 years.
