About <strong>the</strong> Speaker<br />
In priv<strong>at</strong>e practice for nearly 30 years, in 2000 Irwin Fefergrad was<br />
appointed <strong>the</strong> Registrar/Chief Executive Officer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal College <strong>of</strong><br />
Dental Surgeons <strong>of</strong> Ontario. He has <strong>the</strong> distinction <strong>of</strong> being <strong>the</strong> first<br />
lawyer in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Law Society <strong>of</strong> Upper Canada to achieve a<br />
double specialty: one in civil litig<strong>at</strong>ion and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r in health law. He is<br />
<strong>the</strong> first Ontario lawyer to receive a specialty in <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> health law.<br />
Irwin is much in demand provincially, n<strong>at</strong>ionally and intern<strong>at</strong>ionally as a<br />
guest lecturer in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> health law and regul<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
A practicing endodontist, Lionel Lenkinski was a founding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Canadian Dental Protective Associ<strong>at</strong>ion, a mutual benefit group th<strong>at</strong><br />
provides assistance to dentists with p<strong>at</strong>ient disputes and regul<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
m<strong>at</strong>ters. He has spoken extensively on <strong>the</strong> subjects <strong>of</strong> risk management<br />
and regul<strong>at</strong>ory compliance, as <strong>the</strong>y rel<strong>at</strong>e to dental practice. Lionel has a<br />
particular interest in m<strong>at</strong>ters rel<strong>at</strong>ed standards <strong>of</strong> care and conflict<br />
resolution.<br />
Program objectives<br />
1. Inform members about <strong>the</strong> current regul<strong>at</strong>ory environment for dentists<br />
in Ontario<br />
2. Identify areas th<strong>at</strong> are more prone to give rise to actions and complaints<br />
3. Provide a basic str<strong>at</strong>egy for regul<strong>at</strong>ory compliance<br />
4. Inform participants about <strong>the</strong> need for seeking assistance when conflicts<br />
arise<br />
5. Illustr<strong>at</strong>e basic str<strong>at</strong>egies to resolve p<strong>at</strong>ient issues<br />
6. Outline <strong>the</strong> differences between <strong>the</strong> regul<strong>at</strong>ory process and civil<br />
actions(lawsuits)<br />

This program will be <strong>of</strong> interest to all members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dental pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />
Mr. M<strong>at</strong><strong>the</strong>w Wilton is a litig<strong>at</strong>ion lawyer specializing in health law. He has<br />
been assisting dentists in RCDS m<strong>at</strong>ters, principal associ<strong>at</strong>e disputes and<br />
employment law m<strong>at</strong>ters since 1991. As a litig<strong>at</strong>or M<strong>at</strong><strong>the</strong>w has appeared<br />
before <strong>the</strong> RCDS Discipline Committee, <strong>the</strong> Ontario Divisional Court, <strong>the</strong><br />
Ontario Court <strong>of</strong> Appeal, <strong>the</strong> Federal Court <strong>of</strong> Appeal and <strong>the</strong> Supreme<br />
Court <strong>of</strong> Canada. M<strong>at</strong><strong>the</strong>w‘s practice is focused on assisting health<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionals including dentists, physicians, psychologists, nurses and<br />
physio<strong>the</strong>rapists.<br />
About <strong>the</strong> Program<br />
This program will be presented as a panel discussion among <strong>the</strong> three<br />
speakers with interaction with <strong>the</strong> audience. The panelists will use case<br />
histories and examples to illustr<strong>at</strong>e areas <strong>of</strong> particular interest and concern<br />
to practicing dentists with respect to <strong>the</strong> regul<strong>at</strong>ory environment in<br />
Ontario. Common pitfalls, and str<strong>at</strong>egies will be discussed from <strong>the</strong> perspective<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regul<strong>at</strong>or, a dentist in clinical practice and a defense<br />
lawyer.<br />
