The problem of interoperability between software applications across different<br />
organizations, providing a shared understanding of common domains. Ontologies allow applications<br />
to agree on the terms that they use when communicating. Thus, ontologies, if shared among the<br />
interoperating applications, allow the exchange of data to take place not only at a syntactic level,<br />
but also at a semantic level.<br />
Scalability: Analyzing how different ontology building platforms scale when managing large<br />
ontologies with thousands of components, and the time required to open and save ontologies, to<br />
create, update, or remove ontology components, to compute simple or complex queries, and so on.<br />
Navigability: Analyzing how ontology tools allow for navigating large ontologies—how easy<br />
is it to search for a component (graphically, text based, and so on), to extend the ontology with<br />
new components, to obtain a small part of the ontology, and so on.<br />
Usability: Analyzing user interfaces’ clarity and consistency, users’ learning time, stability,<br />
