Thought For The Week:
Tim Russert told church workers attending the
2005 Catholic Social Ministry Gathering that if
there’s an issue that Democrats,
Republicans, conservatives and liberals can
agree on, it’s our kids. With 15 million kids
largely living off the streets and 12 youths
shot dead daily in the United States,
addressing the issue is imperative. In
dealing with own son, Russert said that he told
him: You are always, always loved, but you
are never entitled.
PARISH BULLETIN BOARD
MISSION NEWS
Dear fellow parishioners,
I had an experience of a lifetime.
Having been a member of our June
Mission team, I could not have
received greater love from our hosts,
the Cochoy Family. They went out of
their way to make sure that we were well fed,
comfortable and treated as members of the
household. The reception I received from the children
would warm your heart. They smiled, held my hand,
put their arms around me, and looked at me with the
most grateful eyes I have ever seen. The
Guatemalan people practically worship St.
Raymond’s. Their love for us is witnessed in their
embraces, prayers and constant “thank you” or shall I
say “gracias”. I promise you that the future continued
support through our Proyecto Don Bosco will
undoubtedly strengthen their belief that St.
Raymond’s parishioners are one of God’s gifts to
them. (to be continued next week).
-Ed Corrado
fantastic!! We have sold 424 tickets and have
YOUth Group
Activity continues on our production of Les
Miserables set to open at the end of October.
Tickets will soon be on sale. Night after night, our
parish school auditorium is filled with students and
adults preparing for this event. If you thought that
last year’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat was something—you “ain’t seen
nothing yet!” Les Mis features a large cast (65) and
its music and vocals are sure to impress. Hope to
see you at the show!
ST. RAYMOND’S CENTENNIAL
305 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!
On July 30th, 2009 we will celebrate the 100th
Anniversary of St. Raymond’s Parish. Plans for
our 18 month celebration that will include
spiritual, social, historical and fundraising
activities are beginning now. If you have any
interest in being part of the committees being
formed or have some ideas you would like to
share, please contact the rectory in care of the
Knights of Columbus Annual Retreat
The K of C invites the men of St. Raymond’s
parish to attend their 7th annual retreat at the
Passionist Spiritual Center of Riverdale. The dates
are October 3, 4, 5th, 2008. The Spiritual Centre
location is quite scenic as it overlooks the Hudson
River and is a beautiful setting for your weekend of
spiritual as well as physical renewal.
The theme for the retreat is “Paul the Apostle: an
incredible journey of faith”. The Passionate
program has always been inspiring and no doubt
you will come away refreshed. In addition to the
schedule of talks, prayer, Rosary recitation,
workshops, Reconciliation and Eucharist
celebrations, there are places for quiet reflection
and meditation. As is customary, you go at your
own pace and make the retreat as comfortable as
you desire. The offering for the weekend is $200
and a reservation secured with a $75 deposit.
Should there be any difficulty in meeting the cost of
the retreat Fr. Paul will arrange to accommodate
you. He has stated that he’ll turn no one away
because of their financial situation.
Please feel free to contact Ed Corrado at 596-
3760 should you have any questions. This is my
32nd year of Passionate Retreat weekend
attendance and I certainly attest to the value of a
weekend away with our Savior.
True Christian Hospitality
Christian Hospitality is not just about milk and
cookies, it's about making all people feel welcome in
our parish family. Our newest ministry here at St.
takes many forms but it doesn't take much time. Right
now we are looking for people, couples, families to
serve our people as greeters when they come into
Mass. It is simple, not time consuming, rewarding and
so important. Please consider joining us and finding
Faith Formation
This past Sunday, the first group of Confirmation
candidates attended their retreat at Tabor House, in
Oceanside. We hope they all came away with good
feelings about their experience, and thank Deacons
Rich LaRossa and Tom Connolly for their continued
dedication to these events.
This Sunday we pray for the first of two groups of
our 7th grade candidates for the sacrament of
Confirmation as they celebrate the Welcome and
Commitment Service taking place at the 12 Noon
toward a fuller life in the Holy Spirit. We pray for the
strengthening of the relationship between the
candidates and the Holy Spirit throughout their
journey toward the sacrament of Confirmation.
Blessed Mother Teresa was a saintly
contemporary, who fully understood the needs of the
poor and how serving the poor is working with the
hands and hearts of Jesus. Her virtue and suffering
have been well documented by many writers, so there
is no need to elaborate on her magnificent life.
Because our aim at Parish Social Ministry is to help
and comfort those in need, the wonderful works of this
saintly lady are especially significant to our mission,
and her words are extremely relevant, not only to the
way we conduct our service, but also to the way each
and every one of us must conduct our lives. The
following are her inspirational words for us to ponder:
Holiness is not the luxury of the few but a simple
duty for you and me, so let us be holy as our
Father in heaven is holy. (Life in the Spirit)
We must become holy, not because we want
to feel holy, but because Christ is able to live his
life in us. (Total Surrender)
Holiness is not a privilege of a few but a need
for all. (Heart of Joy)
Holiness consists of carrying out God’s will
with faithfulness. Faithfulness forges saints.
(Hearts of Joy)
Thoughtfulness is the beginning of great
sanctity. If you learn this art of being thoughtful,
you will become more and more Christ like, for his
heart was meek and always thought of the needs
of others---- our lives to be beautiful must be full of
thoughts for others.
(Life in the Spirit)
The Ryan House is a “beautiful” place, where
concerned thoughts, prayers and service are freely
offered, where Christ blesses with His gift of grace all
who come here, and where all are welcome.
expanding goodness in my children.” Members from our committee will be praying the Rosary
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION NEWS
Centennial Flashback
“This year was 1982 and Michael McDougal and his brother Robert had just taken over the landscaping
of the grounds of St. Raymond’s previously tended by Billy Hannan. All of these young
men were St. Raymond school alumni and were very dedicated to keeping the church and school
grounds in tip-top condition. Robert’s service continued until 1986, but Michael continues as our
landscaper today. Michael recounts that many of the priests who served St. Raymond Parish over
the years were gardening aficionados, Father Nilsson really loved gardening! The tree peonies
planted in the back of the rectory outside the kitchen was one of Father Nilsson’s projects. It was
Father Bill who started planting roses, his favorite of all flowers.”
Whatever You Can Do
Is Deeply
Appreciated
26th SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
Today’s liturgy talks about
the freedom we have to say
Yes or No to God. But it also
talks about the possibility of
change. This is brought out very clearly in the
story of the two sons in the Gospel. There is part
of each of these two sons in us. Part of us says
Yes to God and part of us says No to God. We
could fall away. We might not live up to our
promises and obligations, even the most solemn
ones. We could prove unfaithful in marriage,
neglect our children, and turn away from faith. We
cannot take any thing for granted. But then again
the opposite can happen too. We can turn back to
a good life. We can change direction, change our
hearts and be converted. We are not arrows shot
form a bow. We are free human beings who can,
with the help of God’s grace, change the direction
of our lives.
We have to see ourselves in need of continual
conversion in need of correcting our course,
resetting our compass everyday if need be. Every
day we can turn some No into a Yes. This parable
is however, a warning against hypocrisy for all
time. Lip service of God will not merit heaven.
Nominal Christians are not working in the Lord’s
vineyard.
Remember that what God in His mercy did for
the tax collectors and harlots in the parable, the
Matthews, the Mary Magdalene's, the Augustine's,
the Margaret's of Cortona, the Matt Talbots and the
millions of unknown penitents who are now saints
in heaven, He can also do the same for you.
”If today you were called to render an account
the Lord, would the balance sheet be in your
favor”
