He was then chargedwith the task of rearranging and codifying thecanon laws of the Church. His success in thisvast editorial job is astonishing, since he had torewrite and condense decrees that had beenaccumulating for centuries. His collection ofcanon law was completed in 1234 and remainedthe most authoritative compilation within the bodyof canon law until 1917, when a new code waspublished. Pope Gregory sought to rewardcompilation within the body of canon law. PopeGregory sought to reward Raymond by appointinghim archbishop of Tarragona, but the saintdeclined the honor and returned to Spain in 1236.Pastoral Council MembersBernard Kilkelly (Pres.), Carol O’Reilly (Vice Pres.),Karen Gerrity ( Secretary), Marion O’Hara, Maria Papini,Barbara Gribbon, Ray Solga, Frank Stallone & DianePage.Saint Raymond R. From the Pastor’s Desk...Today with the Feast of Christ the King we come to the end ofthe Liturgical Year. Next Sunday will be the beginning of Advent and the start of our four weekpreparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ. The coming of Christmas has been quiteevident in our commercial world where Christmas decorations and the enticements of possibleChristmas gifts have long appeared on the scene. While gift giving and celebrations of all kinds have their place in our Christmas traditions, it isimportant to remind ourselves that a spiritual preparation for Jesus’ birth is part of our Catholicheritage. There is a great danger that we will miss the true meaning of Christmas if we anticipatethe celebration without the preparation of our hearts and home for Jesus. What is happening to oursociety can happen to us also: Christmas will become a holiday rather than a HOLYDAY!The world has its own agenda. Our secularistic society has its own calendar and religion: God andspirituality are not on it. Whether Christmas will be a holiday or a holyday is up to you, especially forparents whose children will experience it with or without Jesus depending on how you prepare forDecember 25th by taking advantage of our Catholic practice of Advent. As men, women, boys, girls, families or individuals of faith, let us resist the temptation to go alongand put CHRIST BACK INTO CHRISTMAS!100 Years of Faith, Love and Friendship-Fr. BillFEAST OF CHRIST THE KINGAs you get older the thought of being given a new device, an ipod, cell phone, a game etc. can be received with mixed emotions. Thethoughtfulness of the giver is not in question. What becomes theproblem is the time and patience needed to read the directions andfigure out how it works. There’s a right way and a wrong way forthings to be put together. There is certain amounts of know how andtechnique that are required to make things click. Sometimes we arejust plain lucky and everything fits together without any problem.More often than not it takes trial and error to figure things out and benefit from the latest fade thatcan bring a new dimension to our life once we’ve mastered it.Today in our celebration our feast of Christ the King we come to realize that the authority andwisdom of our Savior is not a matter of hit or miss, or of trial and error. The wisdom of being apart of the Kingdom of God comes from the fact that our savior is not by majority consent ourpresident nor is He enthroned in power because of royal blood. The authority and wisdom ofJesus, of His kingdom and of His Church comes from that fact that Christ is not only appointedour King but He is also our God. Our salvation lies not in how to figure out the meaning of life byourselves or the intricacies of moral decisions entirely on our own. We have for our leader, ourking, someone who is also God. As God He is all wise and all knowing. Following Jesus as ourKing is not blind faith but a wise and prudent way of life. Following the Good Shepherd brings usinto that eternal pasture of everlasting peace and blessedness.-Fr. BillSaint Raymond R. C. ChurchPage 2

Religious EducationFaith FormationSpecial reminder there will be noReligion Classes on this comingWednesday and Thursday, November 26th& 27th, in celebration of the ThanksgivingHoliday. Also, there will be a Christmas Choirrehearsal on Wednesday, November 26thin the church at 5pm but no play rehearsalon Thursday.FYI—As you all must know, on the fourthThursday of November, the United Statescelebrates harvest time with a Thanksgivingholiday. This tradition began with thePilgrims and the Indians , but it finallybecame a national holiday in 1861—thanksto a lady named Sarah J. Hale. For almost40 years first as the editor of the LadiesMagazine in Boston, and then as editor ofGodey’s Lady’s Book in Philadelphia shekept writing editorials urging that a specialdate should be set aside when the WHOLECOUNTRY would give thanks for theblessings of the year. At last, PresidentLincoln issued a national ThanksgivingProclamation and this holiday has beencelebrated ever since. What will you beespecially thankful for this Thanksgiving? In this Thanksgiving time of the year, yourfamily might like to make up a special“blessing” to say before each meal or youmight want to memorize this one: ”Bless us,Oh Lord, and the gifts which we are aboutto receive, from you goodness, throughChrist our Lord. Amen.”May you all have a blessed and Happy Thanksgiving!Look to the LONG ISLAND CATHOLIC thisweek for items of inspiration from the St.Raymond’s youth and their reminiscences oftheir participation in Les Miserables as wellas kudos to our parish choir and ourambassador of spirituality to the diocese andthe world: Al BarbarinoThe Holiday Season is upon us and let’snot forget that this season of giving thanks forGod’s blessings and of giving gifts is one thatexists because of our Christian beliefs andcelebration of God’s unconditional love for us.Sometimes we get so caught up in the joy of thefestivities that we almost forget the “why?”Thanking God for all He has given us mustinclude the action of caring for and sharing withHis less fortunate children. For that reason, weat Parish Social Ministry hope that you rememberto donate items for our pantry, so that all ourparishioners can enjoy a bountiful Thanksgivingmeal. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society will collectfood on Thanksgiving Day to stock our pantryshelves, which become depleted so quickly.Donating food for the pantry is a very easyway to fulfill the duty to share, and if it is moreconvenient, supermarket gift cards are alwayswelcome. We at Parish Social Ministry wish you all aThanksgiving Day blessed with good food, thelove of family and friends and the joy and peacethat only God can give.Thanksgiving Day PrayerHeavenly Father,This is the day set aside to give you thanks foryour surpassing goodness to human beings. Youhave created us in your own image and set us overyour wonderful creation. You chose a people to beyour own and to carry your message of salvation toall people. You carried out your redemption inJesus your Son, and his saving fruits are passed onto every generation to all who believe that by hisdeath and resurrection Jesus has given them a newfreedom in his Spirit. Let me give you proper thanksfor your blessings---those I am aware of as well asthose that I habitually take for granted, and letme use them according to your will.Saint Raymond R.
