From the Pastor’s Desk…...It is with great honor that St. Raymond’s Parish nominates Carthene MarinaroMcQuade for the Annual St. Agnes Medal.Carthene Marinaro was born on October 11, 1922, in Danbury, Connecticut. Her parents, Mary Tomaino andLouis Marinaro emigrated from Calabria, Italy and struggled to provide for their four children. Carthene and hersiblings attended St. Joseph Elementary School in Danbury, where the foundation of their faith was laid. Her familywere members of St. Joseph Parish, where Carthene was baptized, received her First Communion and Sacraments ofReconciliation, Confirmation and Marriage. It was in these early years of poverty, ties to a large and loving extendedfamily, and devotion to her faith formation, that Carthene learned the importance of service to others.Carthene’s exceptional academic ability caught the attention of a high school teacher, who insisted that shetake a college entrance/scholarship to New Britain Teacher’s College (now Central Connecticut State College) and in1943 graduated as high school business teach. Carthene entered this helping profession as a teacher at DanburyHigh School, where she served for eight years.Carthene earned her Master’s Degree in Education at New York University before leaving her teaching job tomarry Francis McQuade, an Electrical Engineer from Brooklyn, NY, in 1951. She moved to Brooklyn after marryingFrancis where they were active members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Bay Ridge. In 1958, Carthene and her family moved to East Rockaway just prior to the birth of their fourth child. Theyoung family was drawn to the community after having heard wonderful stories of the active and growing St.Raymond’s Parish. It did not take long for the young couple to immerse themselves in the life of St. Raymond’sParish. Their six children eventually graduated from St. Raymond School, where their parents were among the manyadults who modeled service to God and community.Carthene McQuade was an exceptional example of such service. In her fifty years as a member of St.Raymond Parish, she served in almost every aspect of parish and school life. She provided both service andleadership with tireless energy and love. Her many activities included:Sodality of Our Lady: Carthene has been a member of Sodality for fifty years. It is the organization nearestand dearest to her heart, and where many of her closest friendships were and continue to be nurtured. As a Sodalistthere have been countless acts of charitable giving and fundraising. She was one of a select group of women to haveserved as a Sodality Prefect. She has been a spiritual leader, who has offered words of inspiration and solace atcountless wakes and funerals. She has worked for decades at the Sodality Christmas Fair, contributing thousands ofhand knitted articles for sale at the homemade booth, which she mans each year. Carthene served as the Fairchairman as well.Blue Ladies: An off shoot of Sodality, Carthene provided meals to the infirm and impoverished members formany years. Weekly, she would coordinate and deliver donated meals to families in East Rockaway, Bay Park, andLynbrook.Band Associates: Carthene was an active member of the Band Associates, where she supported numerousBand directors, raised funds, provided leadership, chaperoned parades, and supported every need of the St. RaymondSchool Band. All six of her children were members.School Board: Carthene served as a board member and officer, lending her education experience andexpertise as she supported the continued growth of Catholic Education in her community.Parish Council: Carthene served as a member of the St. Raymond Parish Council.Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts: Den Mother and Merit Badge Counselor for many years. Three sons became EagleScouts.4-H Leader: Carthene served as an assistant leader for many years.Bingo: Carthene worked Bingo, a major source of parish funds for many years. As a Bingo worker she soldrefreshments, called numbers, handed out cards, etc.In addition, Carthene and her husband, Frank supported many parish fundraising campaigns as workers, contributors, etc. Frank was equally active as a member of Holy Name, Knights, CYO, Parish Council, NocturnalAdoration and much more. Together, they lived to serve their parish and modeled unyielding faith. Never was arequest for help left unanswered. At eighty six years of age, Carthene remains an active parishioner, most recentlyserving as a columnist for the parish Magazine, The Cloak and as a member of the St. Raymond CentennialCommittee. She has not missed a Parish Dance in decades, and has served as an ambassador of faith and friendshipfor St. Raymond Parish with humility.Carthene will receive this medal from Bishop Murphy on this Friday evening in St. PARISH BULLETIN BOARDMISSION NEWSMy experience in Guatemala wasvery eye opening and refreshing tothe soul. When I left after my firsttrip last year, I didn’t fullycomprehend that what Iexperienced was what the peoplelive each day. When I saw themthe same as I left them last year it really struckme. Seeing my godson, Carlos, again really didmake me feel the happiest I have been. What I’llalways remember was when we took a boat rideto another town and this was the first time thatCarlos had been on a boat. Everyone was gettingwet and looking away so as to reduce thechances of getting soaked, but not Carlos. Everyfew minutes he would look up at me with his wetface and he had the biggest smile that anyonecould have. Saying goodbye to him was thehardest thing I had to do. I really do feel like partof my family is down there and I can’t wait to goback.Greg Monoco (Greg is a High School student fromLynbrook).Every day, without exception since our return fromGuatemala, I have thought of the people who wemet. TWENTY FOURTH SUNDAY INORDINARY TIMEIn today’s Gospel, Jesus asksHis disciples (and us) a verypointed question: “Who doyou say that I am?” ThenJesus tells them that He willsuffer greatly, be rejected andkilled. Like the sufferingservant in today’s 1 st Readingfrom Isaiah, Jesus workedtirelessly to carry God’s wordof salvation and restoration toall mankind, yet many rejected His message. Jesus’suffering and humiliating death on the Cross came asa result of being faithful to the mission His Father hadgiven Him.The disciples objected to what Jesus said regardingHis suffering, because it ran contrary to theirexpectations of the way Jesus’ mission was to beaccomplished. What about us? We too are asked“Who do you say that I am?” Does our answer revealthat we accept God’s way of doing things, which manytimes run contrary to our expectations? Or are weexpecting a powerful miracle-worker to solve ourproblems and take away our suffering?Perhaps we could turn Jesus’ question inward and askourselves “Who do I say that I am?” If I claim to be aChristian, a follower of Jesus the Christ, I can expectrejection and suffering for my beliefs – to be asuffering servant. But following the Gospel, doing theright thing – just as Jesus and the suffering servant did– doesn’t guarantee that we’ll succeed. It’s not aboutsuccess but about being faithful. How can we befaithful when suffering is the price we sometimes mustpay for doing what is right? There’s great consolationin our response to today’s Responsorial Psalm (Psalm116): “I will walk before the Lord, in the land of theliving.” We don’t always escape problems or sufferingin this life but we don’t face them alone; God is alwaysthere with us.Our 2 nd Reading, the Letter of James, is very clear: ifyou believe the Gospel message, then there is onlyone response to make in daily life and that is to act onwhat we have heard. When we see someone in need,we must respond through works of faith-filled charity.-Deacon BobFamilies AnonymousA support group for concerned parents, relatives andfriends of someone who used mind-altering drugs and/or alcohol, meets at 7:30 on Wednesdays at St.Raymond’s School Cafeteria. We invite them to meet us at theschool at 11:45 AM to join us in the procession tothe church.Faith Formation“I ask that you pray for my parents, who fought andtalked of divorce. Please help them stop acting childishand talking of divorce.” Sometimes children in theirunfettered vision see more clearly than adults. They canget right down to basics more easily, because they haveacquired much less baggage in their short lives. Adultscan learn much from the pure hearts and simpleuncluttered wisdom of children. Perhaps, that is whyJesus said we must approach God as little children. In the heat of an argument, we are often blind to theeffect it has on our children. As commonplace as it hasbecome, divorce always leaves scars and is a primereason for economic distress for single mothers. It issaid that charity begins at home and when it blossomsthere, parents are less likely to fall into the trap of selfgratificationand self-interest. The family will flourish asa unit with the grace of God and from there, love andgenerosity flow out to touch the lives of others. In your prayers, please remember the abovementionedchild, who is asking for God’s help, and allthe children, who are in danger of losing, throughdivorce, the security of an intact, loving family.Deacon Charles & Marlene Muscarnera will behosting a Pigrimage to the Holy Land in November,2010 through the Nawas International Travel Group. For further information and a brochure call: 223-4521or e-mail: deacon79@optonline.net. Pius X in Amityville allows ourretired priest to live together in community in asetting that fosters their spiritual lives, nurtures theirphysical and mental well being and guarantees thatthey can continue to live their older years withdignity. This new collection is not to be confused with theDiocesan-wide second collection for retired religiousheld annually in June. That important collectionexclusively supports the retirement needs of religiousbrothers and sisters who have lovingly served ourDiocese. It does not provide support to theretirement needs of our Diocesan priests. The Center is equipped with ramps at both the frontand center entrances which have now been madeeven more accessible with the installation ofautomatic doors! There is an elevator available tothose who may need it. Large Print Missalettes willbe available, as they are for all Masses here at St.Catherine's. (Assisted listening devices are onlyavailable for Masses in the church.)Please come prepared in one week to assist ourretired priests with a gift, as generous as your meanswill allow. Your gift may be placed in the collectionbasket on September 19th/20th. If you prefer, youcan mail a donation by using postage-paidenvelopes available in church. Brochures describingthis appeal are also available in church, and someparishioners may have received one at home. For more information call our Parish Office at:Paula (516) 352-0146On behalf of all the priests who serve our Diocese, thank you for your generosity.Saint Raymond R.
