St. Raymond Parish is conducting “Hurricane Relief”
Fr. Chuck’s Corner
Greetings and God’s blessings be yours on the
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord! Today signals
the official end of the Christmas season.
Monday starts the initial segment of Ordinary
Time. The voice of God rings out loud and clear
in today’s readings proclaiming a message of
salvation. Faith means changing one’s behavior,
a reorientation of one’s whole life. In the first
reading, Isaiah proclaims the fulfillment of Gods
coming. “Then the glory of the Lord shall be
revealed, and all people shall see it together;
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Then in
Paul’s letter to Titus, God’s generous love and
kindness are revealed in Jesus who is our hope;
while Luke’s gospel solidifies the importance of
Jesus through his baptism. “And a voice came
from heaven, ‘You Are my beloved Son; with
you I am well pleased.’”
Through his baptism, Jesus was revealed as
the anointed and chosen one, a sign of God’s
care and the proclamation of God’s grace and
glory. Now with the coming of the Holy Spirit,
God shows his constant process of communication
with humanity. Jesus represents the
fullness of God’s revelation to humanity. As
Jesus says to the apostle Philip, “Whoever has
seen me has seen the Father.” By his example,
Jesus has shown us that God possesses and
expresses to perfection the qualities of truth,
beauty, justice, mercy, grace, goodness,
compassion-in a word, love. Perhaps one of the
most useful titles found in the Bible for God is
the Advent one-Emmanuel, which literally
means “God-with-us.” That conviction, firmly
rooted in our hearts, may be all we ever need to
know about our loving God.
I believe that this feast in honor of the
Baptism of Jesus should remind us of the great
calling of our own baptism. God is revealing
something of how we are to follow Jesus and
ultimately God’s self. The Messiah has come
and as his disciples we are to imitate him in
doing good, living righteously, showing
kindness, and bringing God’s justice which
outlasts all violence. So make sure you know
the date of your own baptism. Use it as a day
to reflect on your own faith commitment.. Con-
nect with God in prayer that day, maybe at Mass
and Holy Communion. Know it as the most
important day in your life for its meaning,
significance and destiny for your life.
What a great response we had to the plea for
help in selling the remaining Backwards
Drawing Tickets last weekend. Over 200 tickets
were taken for sale. Now the key is to get them
all back by this coming Friday, January 18 th , the
day before the Winter Bash party on the
19 th . All ticket agents are asked to please
return their sold or unsold ticket by this Friday,
the 18 th . Tickets for the Winter Bash party are
still available at the rectory during regular
office hours. Check the bulletin ad for more
information. And, again, thanks to all who
stepped up to get a ticket sold last weekend.
The latest issue of The Cloak is being
distributed after all the Masses this
weekend. The theme is Stewardship and it was
supposed to be a part of our annual Stewardship
renewal campaign last November. However,
with the hurricane, we changed this year’s
approach, leaving it as only the parish-wide
mailing that went out in late November. So now
we are offering this issue of The Cloak to
everyone for information and spiritual insight to
the whole approach of Stewardship. Thanks to
John Markey and his diligent staff of reporters
and writers for giving us another great issue of
The Cloak. I hope everyone enjoys it.
Please remember to take home a copy of the
bulletin when you leave Mass today. It contains
many items of interest and invitation with
something for everyone. Of special note is news
and needs from Parish Social Ministry, info
from Religious Education and the Principal’s
Corner from St. Raymond’s School, sign-up for
the March for Life on Friday, January 25 th ,
sponsored by the Human Life Committee and
much more. To keep informed, keep a copy of
the bulletin at home each week for quick and
easy reference.
Have a great week. Smile, share and if you
don’t already know it, find out the date of your
own baptism. Hey: Did you ever wonder what
was the best thing before sliced bread God
bless always.
honor a loved one. Your brick will be a reminder to
church, the impressive God & Country memorial
Family Mass
Next Sunday,
Jan. 20th, 9:00am
We look forward to
seeing your family at
this special Mass!
Tickets are still on sale for our new
Winter Bash party which is replacing the
postponed “Fall Fling.” Because of the
hurricane and all the recovery efforts, I
decided that it was not the time to have
this party so it has been moved to
Saturday January 19, 2013. Hence
the new title of “Winter Bash.”
Previously sold Fall Fling tickets will be
honored for that day or refunds given if
necessary. The party will run from 6-
11pm in the School Auditorium. There
will be food, drink, music, dancing,
raffles, door prizes and surprises. Plus,
throughout the evening festivities the
“Backwards Money Drawing”
tickets will be pulled until the last of the
500 tickets is left which will win the
Grand Prize of $10,000.
So make plans now to enjoy a fun
evening out with friends here at St.
Raymond’s. Tickets to the
“Winter Bash Party” are
$20 each and can be
purchased at the rectory
during regular office hours.
“Given the current political climate, the
40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade &
Nellie’s death (Nellie Gray, the founder of
the “March of Life”), I expect this January
to bring a lot of media coverage. We’ll
warmly embrace it and do our very best to
bring to light as much as we can about our
movement—how positive it is, how youth-focused it is.
The vast majority of participants are 25 and younger,
and that speaks volumes. We know polling is showing
that being pro-life is the new normal in America. More
Americans self-identify as being pro-life, and young
people are the most pro-life of all age groups. Young
people know that abortion is the human rights issue of
our day, and they’re set to overturn Roe v. Wade in
their lifetime to make things right. The other side is
definitely afraid of us, because we have the young
people on our side.
“There have been so many advances in technology,
such as ultra-sound machines that can detect the
sound of the heartbeat, that show that a baby is a
baby from the moment of conception. We don’t ever
have to manipulate or try to cajole people to believe
what we believe, because the truth is so compelling.
As we see more scientific advances and research,
people will become more pro-life.” (Jeanne Monahan,
the new full-time president of the “March for Life
Education & Defense Fund”)
Next monthly meeting: Monday, Jan. 21st, 2:30pm-
4pm, in the rectory basement (MWMR). All are
invited—all are needed. Help be a voice for God’s little
ones residing in the womb.
The Heart
of the Parish
Parish Social Ministry
If we were blessed to escape the fury
of Sandy, the extensive impact of this
that storm may also escape our
comprehension. Unless we are
affected personally in some way, it is
difficult to understand completely the
continued ramifications and domino
effect of such an event. Yet, because
we are a community of especially
concerned and empathetic people in East Rockaway
and Lynbrook our close-knit community will continue
to be as generous as possible so that our neighbors
can return to life close to normal, as quickly as
possible. However, we must realize that much of the
devastation will take months if not years to return to
relative normality. Do we have the resolution and
commitment to stay the course of generosity and
concern for Sandy’s victims for as long as it takes
From what we are privileged to witness at Parish
Social Ministry, we most certainly do. We see a
community dedicated to stewardship; one which
exhibits a cooperate spirit, striving to make a
difference. With the gift of God’s graces, we will
accomplish all that needs to be done.
Disaster Relief Fund: If you know anyone in our
parish neighborhood who was affected by Sandy,
please let him or her know that applications for
Catholic Charities Disaster Relief Fund continue to be
accepted. Everyone who was impacted by Sandy in
our Parish can call Parish Social Ministry (887-9197)
to make an appointment to submit an application for
help with immediate needs. Please help us to spread
the word.
Families Anonymous (FA) is a Twelve-step support
