From the Pastor’s DeskBefore I leave for the hospital and still floating on air from last weekend’s culmination of our Centennialcelebration which couldn’t have been more spectacular and more demonstrative of the spirit that is indicative ofSt. Raymond’s.We cannot cease to sing the praises of our Centennial Chairpersons Noreen Leahy and Bill Nicoletti or all thehard work they put into not only our spectacular grand finale as well as the many, many events leading up tothis day. I hope that soon and elsewhere, the committee will identify the names of each and every one whomade a contribution to this celebration.I single out John Markey for so many ingenious and inspiring recollections that proceeded from his artwork, inaddition to the memorable DVD orchestrated by Bill Albergo that will go on for another century to keep us intouch with this movement. As well as our spectacular choir, musicians and young people that we have becomeaccustomed to enjoy.Every detail was so well covered: THANK YOU! THANK YOU! OVER AND OVER AGAIN! Not only from me–but from every parishioner whether present or not. A day to remember and cherish: completing a century of ...Faith, Love and Friendship,Father BillTwenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeYears ago I had two neighbors one on either side of me. They had been friends foryears. Both were avid gardeners. All winter long they planted seeds in their basementsand carefully tended to the little plants that broke through the dirt. They talked about theirflowers and shared ideas and gave each other plants. One year, the local Garden Club, wanting to encourage everyone to beautify theneighborhood, sponsored a contest and would award a prize to the best garden. Bothmen wanted to win. When all was said and done, one of the men did win and everyonewas happy for him. Everyone that is, except for his friend. He was bitter about it. Hecomplained that the other won because he used the plants and the seeds that he had given to him. When hiswife told him it didn’t matter because the end result was that every garden on the block was beautiful herefused to listen and the two men stopped talking to each other from that point on.Our readings today also speak of jealousy. The Apostles were angered that there were others, not of theirgroup, who were casting out demons. They felt that no one else should be doing that, but Jesus reprimandedthem and told them to leave them alone for if they worked for the same end, they were not enemies. How oftenin our own lives do we allow petty jealousy or our own arrogance to build up walls of resentment againstothers? How often do we not acknowledge the accomplishments of others or offer our hand in friendshipbecause of our own pettiness? As in all things, Jesus, calls us to live our lives in Him and to allow Him to touch many other lives through us.For us to be true Disciples of Christ there can be no room for anything but love for all we meet.Saint Raymond R. PARISH BULLETIN BOARDMISSION NEWSI came to Guatemala hoping tofind a portal into the spiritualitythat seems to occasionally flasha light at me but which vanishesas quickly into the distractionsof everyday life. I witnessedearthly beauty and majesty in aregion where nature is still abundantly visiblein everything. I met people who shared withme what they have though they have little, people who opened their homes to me thoughthey have few comforts that I take for granted, people who I recognized as the best offriends, though I had never met them before. Iwas overwhelmed by their strong sense offamily and community and their devotion toJesus Christ. When we visited the church inSantiago and the shrine to Fr. Stan Rother, Ifelt his presence not only as I saw his bloodon the wall of the room where he wasmartyred and the hole in the floor were thebullet had entered but also I saw him on thefaces of the people who prayed in his parishchurch. He was there on the faces of thepeople who he had tried to protect. The Spiritof Jesus Christ was strong enough in themthat I could feel it. I do not know if it isreasonable with the impressions so fresh inmy memory to know if I have found the“portal” but the Spirit of Jesus Christ was sostrong that my soul was rocked.- Ron Contetta(Ron traveled with his son Matt onthis missionary awareness trip)Fr. Stan Rother was martyred in 1981 and hiscause for canonization has been opened.St. Raymond’s Fall RaffleSt. Raymond’sFALL SWEEPSTAKESEarly Bird Drawing:Thursday, October 1stMain Drawing: Sunday, October 18thDONATION….$25 eachReturn tickets by mailor weekend collection$4,000 in prizesWhatever You Can DoIs DeeplyAppreciated!YOUth Ministry“Tradition” is one of the well-know songs fromFiddler on the Roof. Justcome and join us in prayer.ST. RAYMOND’SHUMAN LIFE COMMITTEEYour baby is quite active in the wombnow—although his or her motherwon’t feel the baby’s movement foranother couple of months. Unique fingerprintsare evident and never change! The baby nowsleeps, awakens and exercises his musclesby turning his head, curling his toes, andopening and closing his mouth, moving histongue—often sucking his thumb! His palm, when stroked, will make a tight fist. Hebreathes amniotic fluid to help develop hisrespiratory system.By just 12 weeks, all the organs and systemsof his body are functioning. The only majoractivity from now until his birth is growth– theincrease in his size. The baby you are prayingfor now weighs one ounce. What a miracle heis! (The baby is referred to as “he” to make foreasier reading. We know that the baby mayalso be a girl—or for that matter– twins ortriplets! Yes, twins and triplets are alsodestroyed through abortion.)You may view an accurate picture of theunborn baby at this time of his growth on thebulletin boards located in the altar servers’sacristy or in the main vestibule of the Church. Please stop and view these pictures so thatwhen anyone talks about abortion or the “rightto choose,” you will have a picture in yourmind of whose life is being chosen to be“terminated.” You will see that the rhetoric of“blob of tissue” or a “clump of cells” does notaccurately describe these little ones in thewomb.BABY BOTTLE FUNDRAISERAt each Mass next weekend there will be aspeaker from the Life center of L.I. to informus of the life-saving work the volunteers do atthis particular crisis pregnancy center. Aftereach Mass, members from the Youth Groupand the Human Life Committee will be offeringempty baby bottles to our parishioners withthe hope that during the next three weeks, thebottles will be filled with the spare change thatall of us accumulate during that time. The LifeCenter is supported entirely by the generouspeople and private contributors on L.I. Pleaseconsider taking a bottle and being part of theeffort to assist in the work of helping mothersand fathers choose life for their little ones.Saint Raymond R. C. ChurchPage 4
