Sal waspresented the award at the installation of officers on 9/25/08at the council where he served as District Warden. Manythanks for your continued work for your neighboring parish. From the Deacon’s BenchBy Deacon Tom ConnollySeveral weeks ago I was addressing a Councilmeeting. That particular night was justafter our commemoration of the tragedy of9/11. Those two numbers when spoken togetherwill forever be seared into the mindsand emotions of all Americans who experienced that infamousday. For some, the severity of the pain and loss willnever lessen; for others, with each passing year, time dullsthe enormity of the event and the sensation subsides. The content of my little talk that night was sparked by thewords Jesus spoke from the cross as He was dying: “Fatherforgive them for they know not what they do.” Here wasJesus, an innocent man, a man who never hurt anyone, aman who cared deeply about the plight of others, a manwho showed love and compassion for all, here He was brutalizedand beaten down in a most horrible fashion and yeteven there in His pain He was teaching us to forgive. How difficult forgiving really is when we have beenwronged or hurt. It is so natural for us to build up such angerand resentment that we just don’t want to forgive. Wewant to maintain that separation even if the other personwas our best friend or sibling or even our spouse. We wrapourselves in the mantle of self-righteousness and refuse tolisten to explanation or repentance. Yet, when the shoe ison the other foot and we are seeking forgiveness we can’tunderstand why, in spite of the depth of our sincerity, ourwords of reconciliation fall on deaf ears.It is and always will be part of the human condition that wewill do things for which we need to seek forgiveness. Ourheavenly Father so loved us, He sent His only Son, Christ,Our Lord, into the world to redeem us from our sins andreunite us to Him. He suffered and died for our sins andthere among the very last words He uttered from the cross,He asked God to forgive those who did this to Him. Heasked God to forgive all of mankind.Though it is difficult, we, too, must learn to follow the exampleof Christ, and forgive those who have hurt us. No, itis not easy but it is what we as followers of Christ are calledto do.Ladies Aux Install OfficersCongratulations to the newly installed officers of the KofCLadies Auxiliary.
