Pope Benedict XVIThe Solemnity of St. John the Baptist is celebratedon June 24th. John challenges us Christians to thefundamental attitude of Christianity—total dependenceon the Father, in Christ. Except for the Mother of God,no one had a higher function in the unfolding ofsalvation. Yet the least in the kingdom, Jesus said, isgreater than he, for the pure gift that the Father gives. The attractiveness as well as the austerity of John, his fierce courage in denouncing evil—all stem fromhis fundamental and total placing of his life within thewill of God. John is always relevant because he callsfor a preparation which all men need to make. Henceevery year there are four weeks in the life of theChurch in which it listens to the voice of the Baptist. These are the weeks of Advent.Pastoral Council MembersThomas Cavanagh, Thomas Chojnacki (Chairperson),Meg Casey (Vice-Chairperson), Doreen Dolan,Karen Gonyon, Mary Murphy (Secretary),Tom Schnaidt, Christopher Simeti, Liz Tortorella,Irene Villacci,Father Chuck RomanoSaint Raymond R. Fr. Chuck’s CornerGreetings and God’s blessing be yours onthe Nativity of John the Baptist and the TwelfthSunday in Ordinary Time! And welcome to“Summer.” May you have a restful andenjoyable time with family and friends. Today’sfeast gets recognition because of the importancethat John played in giving us a new way to relateto God. The first reading from Isaiah shows howJohn was called by birth to a special role: “I willmake you a light to the nations; that mysalvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”Then in the reading from Acts, John’s properrole is defined: “John heralded his coming byproclaiming a baptism of repentance to all thepeople of Israel…” And in Luke’s gospel, Johnis marked from the beginning for his signaturerole in the story of salvation: “What then willthis child be? For surely the hand of the Lordwas with him.”Even if you don’t believe a word of scripture,John is a magnificent personality. He’s called“intertestimental,” part Hebrew prophet, partChristian forerunner, yet not entirely at home ineither world. His surprising birth to agingparents evokes the memory of Abraham andSarah; his angelic annunciation like Isaac’s andSamson’s. His later fashion copies Elijah and hisdiet reminds one of Samson and Samuel. Hisstern message is like many of the writingprophets. John is charismatic enough to attractcrowds of both Israelites and Roman soldiers. He’s fierce enough to frighten a king andsignificant enough to be executed. He is talkedabout for a generation after his death and St.Paul has to straighten out many a group of hisfollowers who persisted in baptizing Christianswith the baptism of John rather than Jesus.Realize that John is mentioned a lot more inthe New Testament than some of the apostles. His initial message to “repent, for the kingdomof God is at hand” was vintage teaching forJesus. They are often compared in those earlyyears Luke’s gospel tries to show the peckingorder of John and Jesus very clearly. WhileElizabeth hides away from the public eye, Maryruns to share her news. And when Mary appearsto Elizabeth, her unborn son acknowledges thepresence of the “blessed fruit” of her wombbefore she sings the Magnificat. John is thepreparer of the way from the first moment. Hewill hide in the desert until it’s time to play therole he was to assume. He had it in him to be asuperstar. He chose to be a signpost. May we allknow our vocation with such crystal clear insight. The “Fortnight for Freedom” began this pastweek and will continue through the 8:45amMass on Independence Day, July 4 th . Pleasecheck the bulletin schedule for prayeropportunities as the special Novena Holy Hoursbegin this coming Tuesday, June 26 th . Let’s alluse this time for prayer, fasting, reflection andwitness in support of Religious Freedom. Please remember to take home a copy of thebulletin when you leave Mass today. It containsmany items of interest and invitation withsomething for everyone. Of special note is newsand needs from Parish Social Ministry, information on the latest Mission Awareness Tripbeing made these next two weeks by parishioners, the last article in the series on ReligiousFreedom, how to obtain Memorial Bricks for anyof our four outdoor shrine areas, the latest 2012Catholic Ministries Appeal Update and muchmore. PARISH BULLETIN BOARDSt. Raymond Human Life CommitteeIf the recent Department ofHealth & Human Services(HHS) mandate is approved itwill force insurers, the CatholicChurch included, to providecoverage for services that arein direct conflict with theChurch’s moral teachings. Inaddition, if this mandate is passed it would give thefederal government authority to decide whichinstitutions are “religious” enough to merit protection oftheir religious liberty. Catholic institutions such ashospitals, schools, colleges, universities, CatholicCharities, adoption agencies, etc., would not fall underthe government’s description of “religious”. To thoseinstitutions that do not abide by this mandate, heavymonetary fines would be imposed. As was stated in last week’s bulletin, the UnitedStates Bishops have called on all Catholics toparticipate in the “Fortnight for Freedom,” a two-week“great hymn of prayer” for our country. Pleaseconsider joining with family and friends in thescheduled prayer gatherings offered at our parish.(The schedule can be found in this bulletin).Remember—the Catholic Church is not trying toimpose its religion/values on everyone in the UnitedStates. No, it’s the federal government that is trying toMANDATE its values, or lack of values, onto theCatholic Church and if we don’t concede, there is aheavy fine that will be paid by the Church.Spiritual Adoption Program Follow-up\For those who were not able to sign up for theSpiritual Adoption Program last weekend, pledgecards are available on the ledges in back of the lastpew on either side of the aisle of the Church. Pleaseplace your signed pledge cards in the boxes provided.Next weekend we will place the signed cards on St.Joseph’s altar; they will remain there until the feast ofSt. Joseph, which will be nine months from the start ofthe program. "One Faith, One Hope, Many Gifts"As we continue into the month of June, our parish continues to creep along with the 2012Catholic Ministries Appeal! We are more than two-thirds to our goal which is good news. Thispositive response comes in the midst of a greater challenge this year. While we did not meet our goalfor the 2011 Appeal, we have been given a bigger challenge for 2012. Our parish goal has beenraised from $95,960.00 to $98,400.00. We raised $86,516.00 from 400 donors in 2011. Therefore ourrebate was $9,748.00 which is a nice return in funds for St. Raymond’s. Once again in 2012, therebate formula remains the same. If we reach our new goal of $98,400.00 in payment we will receive20% back and then 80% of every dollar paid in over the goal. Basically, the better we do for thediocese, the better we do for St. Raymond’s. However, since our goal has gone up and we have had asteady falloff in the total pledge amount and number of donors for the past three years, our potentialrebate will probably also decrease. So what can we do? Well, more donors and a higher pledgeamount would put us on the road to success. As a priest, a pastor and a Catholic member of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, I really dobelieve in the importance of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. This appeal supports more than 40pastoral programs and ministries that serve 133 parishes across Long Island. The funds raised help usin fulfilling our mission to live and share our faith, care for God’s people and build God’s kingdomthroughout Long Island. All the money raised is used to support four main areas of ministry:Catholic Charities, Education, Formation and Pastoral Ministry.During this Stewardship time of renewal and gratitude, perhaps we will also see a nice jumpfurther towards our goal. Prayer is always needed as well as a willingness to share our gifts withthose in need throughout Long Island. Remember, by making a pledge or donation to the CatholicMinistries Appeal, you will be supporting programs that help to feed seniors and families in needright here in our own communities and you will be playing a big part in helping all the other goodworks of the Catholic Church on Long Island. And don’t forget the significant rebate St. Raymond’sParish may also receive by your generosity. Pledge brochures and envelopes are always available forthose wishing to make a pledge or donation on the pew shelves at the rear of the church. Otherwise, look for the mailings sent by the appeal office. In fact, a new mailing from the Diocesan AppealOffice went out a few weeks ago. You can always respond directly to the appeal office and St.Raymond’s will get full credit. We have a parish of 3200 family and individual registrations. Wereally need to increase the amount of donors from the 400 of last year in order to be successful andqualify for the maximum rebate. Please take time to prayerfully consider making a pledge or one time gift. Then if you are ableto help either respond by direct mail to the appeal office or back to the rectory using one of theappeal envelopes found on the pew shelves by the doors of the church. Together, let’s make 2012 abounce back year for the Catholic Ministries Appeal here at St. Raymond Parish. Below is thecurrent appeal update.2012 Parish Goal$98,400.00Pledge/Gift Amount as of 6/22/12$69,686.00Number of Pledges/Donors309Saint Raymond R.C. ChurchPage 10
