Fr. Chuck’s CornerGreetings and God’s blessings be yours on theTwenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time! As I readthrough today’s scriptures, the word "choice" keptcoming to me. They all present a challenge ofchoices to be made. The first reading from Amostalks of the challenges that business people have inbeing honest and just while trying to make profits.Exploitation, cheating and trickery are the order ofthe day according to Amos and he issues a sternwarning from God to those who practice these vices:"Hear this, you who trample upon the needy anddestroy the poor of the land." Unfortunately, weoften think that we can fool God as easily as we foolothers. If we get away with what we know in ourhearts is cruel, mean, unkind, unjust or dishonestbehavior, remember, none of this fools God. And itseems that society indicates nothing to be immoralunless we get caught. The depth of our heart knowsbetter and that is where God is. The choice: ours!In the second reading from Timothy, there is anexhortation to "prayer." Isn’t it so true that when weengage in suspect behavior we’re usually not prayingvery much, if even at all? The Christian life shouldbe formed in prayer for "this is good and pleasing toGod." Again, the choice is ours! And finally today’sgospel from Luke shows that God and money can berival deities in the human heart. This parable of the"unjust steward" is akin to "let’s make a deal."Now, at first it may seem confusing for it sounds likeJesus sort of approves the ways of the unjust steward. He may have squandered his master’s property, enriched himself at his master’s expense, or he maysimply have been incompetent. We don't have thosedetails as to why he lost his job. But before he left hewas bright enough to provide for his future byreducing the size of the debts owed to his master. Then they would feel sorry for him. Whatever wasbehind all this, his dishonesty was not grand larcenyor he would have been more worried about jail thanbegging. And we will miss the point if we try tofigure out the details. The point is that people workvery hard at providing for their well-being in thislife. Yet how hard or dedicated are we in providingfor our spiritual well-being?We are stewards of the time, talent and treasureresources that God has given us. We can wastethem, we can use then for only our self interest, andeven use then to take advantage of others. Or, we canuse then to help others! The important thingto remember is that there is "one higher" than our-selves to whom we eventually will have to makeaccounting of how well we have used our gifts of time, talent and treasure. Jesus calls us "children of light."He speaks these words as we strive to provide for ourspiritual lives just as seriously as people provide fortheir material needs. In other words, "be smart!" Andwe are being smart when we realize that this life isonly temporary (important as it may be), but the nextlife will last forever. Once again, the choice is ours! This Sunday is the annual celebration ofCatechetical Sunday. It is the day when we recognize, honor and thank all those dedicated "catechists" whogive witness by teaching the Catholic faith to theyouth of our parish. It is a great gift that you give toSt. Raymond’s and I hope that you know howappreciated you are for all you do to bring our childrenin both Religious Education and St. Raymond’sSchool closer to Jesus Christ. This past Friday, the annual St. Agnes Medal ofService was awarded to recipients from each parish byBishop William Murphy. This medal is given to arecognized volunteer who has contributed generouslyof their time and talent to the Church in theirindividual parishes. I am happy and proud to announcethat this year the recipient from St. Raymond’s is Ms.Trudy Santoemma. Trudy has contributed throughinvolvement in many ministries at St. Raymond’s overthe years including Parish Social Ministry, theTuesday Art Club, and the Cloak, to name just a few. Iknow the entire St. Raymond Parish Community joinsme in congratulating and thanking you, Trudy, for allyou have done to foster the building of God’s kingdomhere at St. Raymond’s.Please remember to take home a copy of thebulletin when you leave Mass today. PARISH BULLETIN BOARDSt. Raymond Human Life Committee“Catholics who publicly dissent from theChurch’s teaching on the right to life of allunborn children should recognize that theyhave freely chosen by their own actions toseparate themselves from what the Churchbelieves and teaches. They have alsoseparated themselves in a significant wayfrom the Catholic community. H.S.The Heart ofthe ParishParish Social MinistryOn September 11, 2010, we hereat St. Raymond’s were privilegedto participate in a Mass offered inloving memory of “Our Heroes” ofSept. 11, 2001. Fr. Chuck, ourpastor, was the principal celebrantassisted by all of our availableclergy. Fr. Chuck delivered anencouraging homily. He placedbefore us the concept of security, and by way of some anecdotes ledus to envisioning “care andcomfort”. What better definition of“security” than “care and comfort”?Father went on to point out thatChurch was a place to find care and comfort.Just as he was saying “Faith coupled with care andcomfort…”, a man clasping a tote bag entered theRoosevelt Avenue side door. He moved deliberatelybut quietly toward the main altar and up the steps tothe left at St. Joseph’s altar. Unconcerned; possiblyoblivious to what was taking place, he reached into hisbag, took out a box of cereal and set it up under atable prepared for the memorial. Then box #2 andbox #3, lined them up nice and straight. Turned andretreated. How many people observed this, we’ll never know, but I smiled and thought “care and comfort” for ahungry family. At this point, Father Chuck was saying,“Homebound faith…”Church is about care and comfort. Here we witnessedthe spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Fr. Chuckcomforting the sorrowful; a benefactor feeding thehungry.May God be good to those who are grieving. MayGod be good to those who feed the hungry. 2010 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL“Every Gift Counts”As I mentioned earlier this summer, I can see thatour parish is slowly but steadily moving forward toreach this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal goal, which is $95,960.00. Now, I have been part of thisappeal for many years, both as an associate andas pastor. I know that it is always a challenge andsometimes a real struggle for a parish to meet itsgoal each year. As you can see from the updategiven at the bottom of this column, St. Raymond’shas reached a little better than 75% of its goal inpledges and gifts. While that is encouragingnews, time is running out. There is just a littleover four months left in which to reach our goal andthus qualify for the parish rebate.I know that it is a much tougher time for mostpeople and so giving to the appeal may not bepossible. But I also believe that like the slogan atthe top says,"Every Gift Counts." Any pledge orone time gift is most appreciated and needed for usto reach and surpass our goal. Remember, oncewe reach the goal of $95,960.00 in payment, wewill receive 20% back as a rebate and then we willreceive 80% of every dollar paid in over the goal. This money is an important part of our parish’sfundraising budget. Basically, it comes down tohelping the diocese means helping St. RaymondParish. And, like you, I’m all for anything that helpsus.I truly believe in the importance of the CatholicMinistries Appeal. As part of the diocese we allshare in her mission to build up the Body of Christon Long Island. While St. Raymond Parish is ourpart of the kingdom here on earth, we are allmembers of one Body, the Church. We all benefitfrom the many services and ministries of thediocese: Education (Grammar Schools and HighSchools, Faith Formation and Religious Education),Formation (Priests and Deacons, PastoralFormation) Catholic Charities and its vast networkof outreach services. Yes, the Catholic MinistriesAppeal is a way to acknowledge that, "The GiftsWe Have, We Are Given To Share." The sharingof some of our "Treasure" with the appeal enablesopportunities for the sharing of "Time and Talent"throughout the diocese, and that is when"Stewardship" works at its best.I want to thank our parish committee membersfor the great work they have done and continue todo each year in making this appeal a success. Also, thanks to all who have already made apledge or gift. And, I urge everyone else toprayerfully and reflectively consider still making apledge or one time gift. I’m sure we can soon breakthrough the goal amount and really build up ourpotential rebate for 2010. A new mailing was sentto our parishioners at the beginning of Augustfrom the appeal office asking for help. Pledgeand gift envelopes with brochures are alsoalways available on the back pews of thechurch. You can either mail directly to the appealoffice or to the rectory. Either way, St. Raymond”swill get the credit.Remember, no gift is too small and every giftwill help St. Raymond’s - your parish!Father Chuck2010 Parish Goal$95.960.00Pledge/Gift Amount as of 8/1/10$76,146Paid Pledges$66,068.Number of Pledges/Gifts378As of September 14, 2010Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary TimeSome things never change—The prophet Amos, lived eight centuries before Christ, but the warninghe issued against greed, in dealing with others, is still needed today. We must always care aboutthose who, for whatever reason, live in want. Some things never change—Our second reading, from the first letter of Timothy, was written at atime when Christians were trying to get along with the Roman government. Wisely, they are advisedto pray for those who have power over them. Do you remember to pray for our leaders, whosedecisions affect our nation’s values? In our Gospel reading today, Jesus warns His followers against allowing money to become their master. Once again, some things never change! Greed for money and possessions can be like a virus that sneaks into our lives. If we ignoreit, the infection gets worse and may even become deadly. The most precious treasure we have is the love of our God,which means more than all our worldly possessions.- Evelyn ContaldiSaint Raymond R. C. ChurchPage 8

Catechetical SundaySeptember 19, 2010Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:Today we join parishes throughout the country in celebratingCatechetical Sunday. The theme for this year’s celebration is“Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love.” Our catechetical year willbe devoted to an emphasis on the Bishops’ Pastoral: Marriage: Love andLife in the Divine Plan.”The Sacrament of Marriage is the highest expression of human loveand commitment between a man and a woman. It is the gift of life andlove that brings to couples the joy of family life. It reflects andembodies Christ’s love for His Church! The challenges of living Christian Marriage and family life today aremany. Too often we hear that catechesis at the time of preparing couplesfor the sacrament of marriage is too late. We are making every effort tobroaden our understanding of the catechetical endeavor as we developour catechetical programs for children and families. On this Catechetical Sunday we take the opportunity to express ourgratitude to all those who give of their time and talent to work with ourchildren and young people each week. We thank the members of ourcatechumenal teams, those who prepare parents for the baptism of theirinfants, and the many couples who work in Marriage preparationministries. Finally, the catechetical ministry would not be complete without thefull participation of parents. As we begin a new catechetical year werecognize that the family is the primary place for formation in the faith.Families who worship together on Sunday and pray together during theweek, who foster Christian values and strive to live the Gospel are to becongratulated.Ultimately, the challenge of teaching the faith is one offered to eachbaptized person. Others will encounter Christ if each of us strives to bethe presence of Christ in the world today. As we face the challenges ofkeeping the faith alive in the 21 st century let us all strive to be thepresence of Christ for others!Sincerely yours in Christ,Bishop of Rockville CentreSaint Raymond R.
