Fr. Chuck’s CornerGreetings and God’s blessings be yours as wecelebrate Palm Sunday and the beginning ofHoly Week! Our Lenten journey is dwindlingdown to a precious few days as we enter this mostsolemn time of the year. We start with PalmSunday to gather in faithfulness and give witnessthat we belong to Christ and his Church. The firstreading from Isaiah builds on the chapter’s focusof restating God’s intention to renew the covenantwith Israel. All credit is given to God withsupreme confidence in his constant help. “TheLord God is my help, therefore I am notdisgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowingthat I shall not be put to shame.” Then in Paul’sletter to the Philippians, we have the picture ofJesus’ self-emptying and the rewards he receivesfrom the Father. “Christ Jesus, though he was inthe form of God, did not regard equality with Godsomething to be grasped………Because of this,God greatly exalted him.” And finally we havethe Passion Narrative from Luke’s gospel. Luke’sversion of the passion and death of the Lord showsJesus reaching out, offering sinners another chanceand everyone an invitation to join him along theway of the cross. In Luke’s passion narrative, we see Jesusconstantly reaching out to help people along theway. He reaches out to Judas with a question:“Are you betraying the Son of Man with akiss?” How did Judas feel when he heard thesewords? He reaches out to Peter, who denied himthree times, with a look. We know that Peter wentout and wept bitterly. And then he became thegreat apostle that Jesus called him to be. Hereaches out to the elders by declaring that he wasthe Son of Man. They could have listened butinstead came back with a verdict of death. Hereaches out to Pilate, who recognized hisinnocence but was afraid to act on conviction. Hereaches out to Herod but he could not understandwhat silence meant. He reaches out to thedaughters of Jerusalem by diverting their attentionfrom him to their children. He reaches out to thosewho nailed him to the cross by saying: “Fatherforgive them.” He reaches out to the Good Thiefby promising: “Amen, I say to you, today you willbe with me in paradise.”And Jesus reaches out to us today. We may beloyal followers or weary ones, sometimes denyingor even betraying. All of us in some way havehelped drive the nails into his sacred hands andfeet. Whoever we are, it is not too late for us to letJesus touch us with his grace, his forgiveness, hisstrength, his love. We can go up to Jerusalem withhim this week. We can walk with him. We canrenew the grace of our Baptism by making a goodConfession. And we can come to walk with himfor the rest of our lives. Jesus eagerly desired thatwe should all have come to Mass today. Let uswalk with him through this Eucharist and throughthis Holy Week so that we can also experience thepower of his death and resurrection. Only thencan we truly live with Jesus the new life ofEaster. In this bulletin there is a special Holy Weekschedule listing the dates and times for all theservices that will occur at St. Raymond’s fromnow through Easter Sunday. I feelfortunate to be able to give him thisopportunity, as I know it will be a lifechanging experience. I am sure of thisbecause it was for me when I served asa Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras in the late1980's. It was the first time I had traveled outside theUS and I expected everything and everyone would bevery different and foreign. On the surface, there were many differences. Thehousing for example; they lived in one room cinderblock or mud and stick houses with no running wateror electricity and I had grown up in a four bedroomcolonial in a middle class suburb of Boston. However,as my Spanish improved and I was able to really getto know the people in my community, I came to realizehow much more we had in common. Much like me,they simply wanted to be safe and happy, have familyand friends close by and the means to have theirbasic needs met. I was humbled by theirgenerosity. They gave so much of themselves whenthey really had very little to spare. They had greatfaith that God would bring them through theirhardships. They lived simply but joyfully. Theirexample has been an inspiration for me throughoutmy life. I know this will be true for my son after ourvisit to Guatemala. --Lori Rappa- RodriguezGreetings from Father Agnelo…Dear Father Chuck,Fathers, Deacons and Parishioners,Greetings of peace this Easter! 2013 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL“Serving God by Serving Others”Happy Spring and Holy Week! We began the 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal last month with achallenge to once again have a successful campaign here at St. Raymond’s. The past three years have not beensuccessful ones for our parish and we have seen our annual rebate shrink from over $10,000 to just $1256 forthe 2012 campaign. Our new goal for 2013 is $98,500.00 which is a slight increase. The campaign office willbe sending periodic mailings, which is the way most of the goal amount is attained. Thanks to thoseparishioners who have already responded this year. The rebate formula nets the parish 20% of the goalamount once it has been fully paid and then 50% of any money raised over the goal. Please take time to readthe information found in the weekly bulletin and mailings. There are special pledge envelopes on the pewshelves at the front doors of the church. You can return them to us or directly back to the appealoffice. Either way, St. Raymond’s will get the credit. Let’s give it our best shot and try to get back on thewinning track this year.2013 Catholic Ministries Goal$98,500.00Pledge/Gift Total as of 3/20/13$42,051.00Number of Pledges/Gifts193Did You Know?
