Fr. Chuck’s CornerGreetings and God’s blessings be yours on theTwelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time! Today’sreadings have to do with suffering and acceptingthe crosses that come our way in life. In the firstreading from the prophet, Zechariah, he foretellsthe arrival of the Spirit that will change theattitudes of the people from sin and selfishness tobeing more loving and forgiving. “On that daythere shall be open to the house of David and tothe inhabitants of Jerusalem, a fountain to purifyfrom sin and uncleanness.” Then St. Paul inspeaking to the Galatians, claims that distinctionsof people are all united in Christ. “For all of youwho were baptized into Christ have clothedyourself with Christ.” And finally in Luke’sgospel, we are being challenged to deny ourselvesand take up our crosses daily in order to followJesus. “If anyone wishes to come after me, hemust deny himself and take up his cross dailyand follow me.”A question has hung over the world for 20centuries: Who is Jesus? Is he the messiahpromised in the sacred texts of the past? And if sohow are we to understand him? What differencedoes it make if we accept it or not? We reallyshouldn’t be surprised that the identity of Jesus isup for grabs among God-fearing people. So it wasin his time and among his own friends. Even afterall he did and taught, all the miracles and healings;the signs; his disciples fled him after hisResurrection. Among those who accepted Jesusas Lord and Savior there were still sharpdistinctions as to what the consequences of thatfaith might be.St. Paul insisted that faith in Jesus, literallyconfidence in him obliterated three traditionaldistinctions among persons. There were threeblessings: being human, being a man and beingGreek at the time. Paul attacked all three claimingunity “in Christ” confers unity beyond any mortaldivision. This was a thrilling and destabilizingnotion, and it still is. Where we take it in themodern world is another matter. Many would bealarmed at this sort of extreme unity, howeverliberal we might think we are. In Christ are thereProtestants and Catholics? Vatican II cheerleadersand Tridentine loyalists? Are there distinctlyregarded men and women, with male and femalebaptismal opportunities? Even if we get theidentity of Jesus right, do we know where theconsequences may take us?And then there is the matter of “taking up yourcross” as a way of dealing with the daily stressesand burdens of life. But in the scriptural sense itmeans more than having patience. It is reallyabout being willing to make sacrifices to followJesus. He would remind his disciples that to walkwith him would not always be pleasant, somethingthey didn’t always want to hear. His is a way ofsacrifice. So I suggest that before you grab thatcross and try to follow, best to know who you arereally following and placing all your confidencein. The 2013 Fortnight for Freedom began thispast Friday. No! No!In his State of the State address,Governor Cuomo announced his supportfor a bill called the “Reproductive HealthAct”. This is an extreme bill, and it wouldgreatly expand abortion in New YorkState. It would declare abortion a“fundamentalright,” and would ensure that abortion islegal through all nine months ofpregnancy, for any reason. It would make prevent any reasonableregulation such as parental notificationor informed consent requirements, orbans on partial birth abortions. It would endanger women by allowingnon-doctors to perform abortions. It could threaten the religious liberty ofreligious hospitals by requiring them tocooperate in abortions.New York State already has far too manyabortions -- over 30% of pregnancies endin abortion, over 111,000 each year. Wedon’t need broader abortion laws. We needour law to respect human life at all stages. And we need to offer New York womenreal alternatives to abortion and providethem with a network of support andresources to enable them to bear theirchildren and raise their families withdignity. Please contact your state legislators tooppose the “Reproductive Health Act” orany other measure designed to expandabortion in New York State. Inaddition, this mandate gives the federalgovernment authority to decide whichinstitutions are ―religious‖ enough to meritprotection of their religious liberty. Catholic institutionssuch as hospitals, schools, colleges, universities,Catholic Charities, adoption agencies, etc., would notfall under the government description of ―religious‖.The United States Bishops have called on all Catholicsto participate in the ―Fortnight for Freedom‖, a twoweek ―great hymn of prayer‖ for our country. Pleaseconsider joining with family and friends in thescheduled prayer gatherings offered at our parish .(Beginning Wednesday, June 26th and concluding onThursday, July 4th.) Remember—the Catholic Churchis not trying to impose our faith and values oneveryone in the United States. No, it’s the federalgovernment that is trying to MANDATE its values, orlack of values, on the Catholic Church and all peopleand institutions that are in sharp moral disagreementwith our government. Heavy monetary fines will beimposed on the Church and institutions that do notconcede to the government’s demands and itsdisregard for our religious freedom.Spiritual Adoption Program Follow-UpFor those who were not able to sign up for theSpiritual Adoption Program last weekend, pledgecards are available on the ledges in back of the lastpew on either side of the aisle of the church. Catholics for Freedom of ReligionAmerica’s First Freedom:Religious Liberty"The spirit of our age is profoundly secular and secularism accepts religion - if itaccepts it at all - only on its own terms. 2013 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL“Serving God by Serving Others”As we continue the month of June, the 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal has been in full swing for overthree months. Our challenge is to once again have a successful campaign here at St. Raymond’s. In threemonths we have moved past the halfway mark. While that is good, it is lagging a bit behind the totals for2012 for the same period. The past three years have not been successful ones for our parish and we haveseen our annual rebate shrink from over $10,000 to just $1256 for the 2012 campaign. Our new goal for2013 is $98,500.00 which is a slight increase. The campaign office will be sending periodic mailings, which is the way most of the goal amount is attained. Thanks to those parishioners who have alreadyresponded this year. The rebate formula nets the parish 20% of the goal amount once it has been fully paidand then 50% of any money raised over the goal. Please take time to read the information found in theweekly bulletin and mailings. There are special pledge envelopes on the pew shelves at the front doors ofthe church. You can return them to us or directly back to the appeal office. Either way, St. Raymond’swill get the credit. Let’s give it our best shot and try to get back on the winning track this year.2013 Catholic Ministries Goal$98,500.00Pledge/Gift Total as of 6/12/13$63,246.00Number of Pledges/Gifts293The key to the success of our Catholic Ministries Appeal is participation.Every year, the Catholic Ministries Appeal provides the means to continue the missionthat Christ has entrusted to us: to serve God by serving others. The work of the Catholic Ministries Appeal is evident in our Parishes. At the heart ofliving our faith are the Sacraments. An essential part of the life of the Sacraments is our priestsand deacons. Through the Appeal, we support their prayer lives and education, and thusprovide celebrants for baptisms, First Communion, Confirmations, marriages, and funerals. We also support religious education for children, spiritual and education development forlay leaders and prayer groups and continuing adult faith formation. The work of the Catholic Ministries Appeal is also evident when we care for God’speople who need housing; food and clothing and we are able to provide these services throughCatholic Charities and our Outreach Programs. When we celebrate special needs Masses forchildren and adults in our Diocese; and when our vibrant college campus ministry and youthministry programs encourage our young people to grow rooted in Christ and firm in the faith. My hope is that each family will make a gift. We cannot askeveryone to consider the same size gift, but we ask that your giftreflect how generous God has been to you with His gifts. No gift is too small and all gifts make a difference in the lives of others!Visit www.CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org to make an online donation.Saint Raymond R.C.
