Pastoral Council
On behalf of the good people of the Parish of
St. Raymond we welcome our tenth pastor,
Fr. Charles Romano, may God bless as you undertake
your new role.
This past week the Church celebrated the feast days
of several special men including martyrs St. John
Fisher and St. Thomas More. As a result of their refusal
to sign an oath declaring the King of England as the
Supreme Head of the Church of England, they were
imprisoned and eventually put to death. How easy
would it have been for both of them to simply go along,
but such was their faith and the power of their
consciences that they would not break with God.
As he sat in prison St. Thomas More wrote: "Give me
the grace, Good Lord to set the world at naught. To set
the mind firmly on You and not to hang upon the words
of men's mouths...To have continually in mind the
passion that Christ suffered for me. For His benefits
unceasingly to give Him thanks...".
St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher pray for us.
From the Former Pastor’s Desk…
My thanks to each and every one of you for your
kindness to me during these difficult days.
Thank you to the Pastoral Council for all you
did to arrange for my Mass of Thanksgiving and
the reception you so graciously arranged and all
those involved did to make if such a memorable
event. My thanks to the Knights and the Sodality
who I have tried in every way to relieve of the
responsibility of being the caregivers for every
parish event. God bless our young people for
always rising to the occasion in such a Christian
manner. I am so proud of you! I will never stop
“singing” your praises, not only for your talent but
for the manner in which you conducted
yourselves.
I especially appreciate the affirmations you
gave me. Looking back sometimes initiatives that
were taken fade into the background. It is good
for me that some were recalled in such a positive
fashion.
-Father Bill
and Winnie too!
Unfortunately, Winnie took off in the wrong direction after the 10:30 Mass and was
last seen high above heading toward Montauk rather than Elmont.
Father Mike Rieder: If Winnie appears at your door in Montauk, please send Winnie
home.
I love you all. Please pray for me as I will for you.
Spiritual Adoption Program Follow-up
There have been many interesting ways in
which some participants to the Spiritual
Adoption Program have implemented
reminders to say the daily prayer. For
example: some include the prayer for the
pre-born babies at dinner time when the
family is gathered at the kitchen table, others keep the
prayer in their wallet and recite it during their daily
commute to work; some have taped the prayer to their
medicine cabinet, car dashboard, television remote
control—all in an effort to remember to keep the
babies in their daily prayer. Thank you for participating
in this wonderful prayer program for life.
For those who were not able to sign up for the
Spiritual Adoption Program last weekend, pledge
cards are available at each of the Church entrances.
Please place your signed pledge cards in the boxes
provided. Next weekend we will place the signed
cards on St. Joseph’s altar; they will remain there until
the feast of St. Joseph, which is nine moths from our
beginning on Father’s Day. Thank you!
PARISH BULLETIN BOARD
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
People start asking us the question pretty early: What do you want to be when
you grow up We want so many things in the beginning, as much as wonder permits.
We want to be artists, rock stars, presidents, NASCAR racers, truck drivers,
millionaires. When it comes to our early dreams for life, our eyes are the limit.
Whatever we see, we imagine ourselves becoming—at least for a while.
By high school we absorb the deflating truth that we have to take definite steps
to become something. And what we become may well preclude other things or
everything else. Maybe that’s when we define ourselves down to the traditional
goals: a good paying job, someone to love, home, family. We get behind the plow
and try to keep the lines reasonably straight.
We know nothing about Elisha before the day Elijah snapped him up for great things. All we know is
what we hear about that particular day: a young man plowing in the fields, keeping the lines straight, his
thoughts on his chores and his duty to his family. And then, suddenly, his world gets dis-mantled. A flying
cloak is hurled across his shoulders, and the prophet who flung it hurries down the road. A startled
Elisha has to run to catch up with him. He knows the authority one must assume with this cloak. He
knows the sword of decision hangs right above his head. He knows the classic domestic life he’d assumed
for himself is no longer a given. He has to make a radical choice, and make it now.
Elisha belongs to the lucky ones because he understands so much about his predicament. Most of us
are more like those hapless folks who run up to Jesus along the journey and make half-baked pledges
of allegiance to him. “I’ll follow you wherever you go,” we say to Jesus—but give no thought to how radical
a journey that might be. Or we make conditional statements: “I’ll follow later—but first . . . but only
if… but on one condition…” Jesus exposes these false declarations of discipleship for what they are and
rejects them all.
Authentic followers don’t look back. They turn forward. We can only head into kingdom territory if we
first abandon our allegiance to other, smaller goals. Because Elisha is perceptive, responsive, and decisive,
he becomes the greatest of the prophets, greater even than the one whose mantle he accepts. We
never learn what those other people become who once were offered a great opportunity—and preferred
things just as they are.
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
In today’s second reading, St. Paul provides a
wonderful one-sentence summary of Christian
stewardship: “Out of love, place yourselves at one
another’s service.”
THIS WEEK’S TIME & TALENT SALUTE
The Sodality of Our Lady, who have been a
mainstay of support for our parish activities and
celebrations; for the expenditure of their time,
talent and treasure to insure success of parish
projects.
LIVING STEWARDSHIP
Dear Fr. Bill,
Peace and greeting from the South Pacific! I hope that all is
well at St. Raymond’s. This must be Memorial Day Weekend,
today is actually my 24th Anniversary of my Priesthood
Ordination and as always, I can’t believe how fast time races
by! I’m hoping to be home this time next year, and while we
never celebrate birthdays or yearly occasions here in the
Solomons, I guess I should do something for the 25th
anniversary of my Priesthood, and it will be my 10th as bishop!
Yesterday I received news from our NYC Mission Office of
your 2 recent most generous and faithful gifts for the missions.
THANKS SO VERY MUCH for your continued help and
prayers.
Our small but fast growing Diocese continues to move along.
On June 11th, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we will
formally open another new parish. It is in a place called Narioa
and the parish patron is the Sacred Heart. Founding pastor is a
young local priest Fr. Alban Raukeniana and he has a
seminarian with him who will be ordained a transitional deacon
June 19th—and a priest in November. In the States some inner
city dioceses seem to be downsizing, thankfully, we are in the
opposite mode!
Again, thanks for your great help and the wonderful interest in
the Missions that you have so greatly encouraged at beloved
St. Raymond’s.
Most fraternally and gratefully,
Bishop Christopher Cardone
disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and
disasters. Through your generosity, with Pope
Benedict we can cast the love of Christ upon the
world.
Principal’s Corner
The final bell for the school year has
rung; books are shelved; closets
were cleaned; students and teachers
have bid farewell for the summer;
and all is quiet! Our students worked
hard this year and deserve the
vacation they are experiencing now.
However, it’s not without some school work. We
always need to prepare for the upcoming year, so
each of our students left for the summer with review
assignments.
To show the hard work of the middle school, I want
to share the Honor Roll for the final school trimester:
