like the substance. I liked explaining why my client was right and trying to<br />
convince you that my client’s right and trying to get you to vote for them because<br />
they’re right and if I can’t do that, I’ll make up another argument why they’re right<br />
until I finally do convince you. And that really wasn’t mostly what it was about.<br />
Whereas at the local electoral level, what I do in zoning cases is lobbying too, but<br />
it’s non-partisan. It’s much, each case is much cleaner. In the State Legislature<br />
every issue is connected to every other issue. Because I need your vote on this<br />
issue and you need my vote on that issue, so I will trade you immigration for<br />
drunk driving this year and we’ll work out deals. And there are all these other<br />
cross issue deals. I don’t like that. I’d rather just take my shot, explain my case<br />
and get a vote. I also like the substance of real estate and urban growth. I’m a<br />
frustrated architect probably because of the ”big pink building”. I toyed <strong>with</strong><br />
thinking I might be an architect but I can’t draw, I don’t like math and architects<br />
don’t make very much money. What I do is I explain architecture to politicians<br />
and that’s been a good niche for me.<br />
Q. You do represent a lot of the developers and people like that<br />
A. Yes, yes.<br />
Q. Sometimes that’s become kind of a dirty word around here.<br />
A. Yes, it has, it has and that’s okay. I mean I understand that and I will defend that<br />
much of the time. In ‘99 I wrote a book on Phoenix and some of that book is an<br />
attempt to explain and defend the way a city has grown against people who<br />
