Page 12 - Idyllwild Town Crier, July 17, 2008 On the Town Local Dining, Arts & Entertainment Bluegrass enlivens Summer Concert Series By Marshall Smith Correspondent Silverado Bluegrass, a Lake Elsinore-based pickin’ quintet, encamps at Mt. San Jacinto State Park on July 24 as the third act in Ken Dahleen’s Idyllwild Summer Concert Series. Starting at 7 p.m., Silverado musicians Mike Nadolson (guitar and vocals), David Dias (dobro and vocals), Noel Taggart (mandolin and vocals), Kevin Gore (banjo and vocals) and Fred Wade (bass) bring this Appalachian offshoot of traditional country music to Idyllwild. Like country music, bluegrass is an American music form with Celtic roots that can be distinguished from country by its acoustic instruments and improvisational structure. Bluegrass is the music of British Isle immigrants to America, particularly the Scots-Irish that settled up and down the Appalachian mountains in hills and hollers. The term “bluegrass” originated with William Smith (Bill) Monroe’s group the Blue Grass Boys, with instrumentation of fiddle, guitar, mandolin and banjo in the mid-20th century. Monroe begat Flatt and Scruggs, who begat the Foggy Mountain Boys and by the mid-1950s, “bluegrass” had established itself as a distinct fi rst cousin of country. Typically in bluegrass, each lead instrument player states the melody then improvises on it before passing it on to another bandmate. Besides instrumentation, bluegrass is distinguished by vocal harmony — two-, three- or four-part. Varietals emerge over time as single players or bluegrass fusion groups. A second generation of bluegrass players includes notables like John Hartford, the Dillards and Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia on banjo. Hybrids of bluegrass and jazz emerged The Silverado Bluegrass Band performs at the Idyllwild Summer Concert Series on July 24. in the music of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Doc Watson, David Grisman and Sam Bush. The Coen Brothers’ 2000 fi lm, “O Brother, Where Art Thou” starring George Clooney brought wider exposure to the traditional bluegrass form. Silverado brings traditional bluegrass to its Hill date, with, according to its Web site, “the high lonesome sounds of traditional bluegrass vocals, with smooth, tight and intriguing harmonies. This, along with superb acoustic instrumentation and innovative arrangements” will have Hill folks dancing on the grass under starry mountain skies. Dahleen’s series is free to attendees but depends upon sponsorships to meet expenses each year. This year, because of the economic downturn, Dahleen said sponsorships are fewer than at any time in the series’ history. “We’re still thousands of dollars under budget,” said Dahleen, hoping for additional community participation. Anyone wishing to contribute may contact Dahleen through the event Web site http://mysite.verizon.net/ kendahleen/. The organization also has an account at Guaranty Bank in Idyllwild for people who wish to donate anonymously. And, donations are accepted at the event. Audience members may bring chairs or blankets, food and drinks, and sweaters or jackets for when the weather cools down. They also are invited to dance under the pines. Katrina art exhibit at jazz festival “Katrina Through the Eyes of Children” is a mixedmedia exhibit of artwork created by children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The exhibit will be at the Parks Exhibition Center on the Idyllwild Arts campus during Jazz in the Pines on Aug. 23 and 24. Karla Leopold, an art therapist at Idyllwild Arts, was one of a team of therapists that made nine visits to Renaissance Village, the largest trailer park for Katrina evacuees, to work with the children. The art expresses their losses, anger and depression, as well as their hopes and dreams for the future. The exhibit includes drawings, paintings, photographs and scultpures. A community-wide casting call last Saturday invited all ages to try out for different parts available in these short films at the Ryan Sound Stage on campus.
