COLONEL BO’s WAR STORIES
Last week a guy from the L.A. Times called wanting to know if my war
stories were true or fiction. I told him my stories are like every other old soldier’s
stories: Some of each. Mine have the advantage of being lifted largely from my
war journals. For 33 years, through four wars I served America as a fighter
pilot, Pentagon Planner, White House Staff, Mid-East Mediator and spy. I have
been thrice recalled to the colors — latest in 2002. You may remember terrorist
master, Osama bin Laden was reported escaping from Afghanistan into China
by way of the hidden Wakhan Defile through the Hindu Kush Mountains. I had
been there training tribal militia to fight the Russians in the 1970s, so I was
recalled to lead a Hazara Search Team into Central Asia. We joined a caravan
that followed the ancient Silk
Road across the Gobi Desert, east. At sundown, Day
Twelve we pulled up to rest our camels at the Muji Oasis
on the Yarkland River east of Kashi, China. There at a
Zen Tribal Campfire, I was inducted into the oldest craft
fraternity known to man — The Raconteurs Internationals.
