PLENARY SESSION
11:35 am – 11:55 am
P1060 Finding Huck Finn: Reclaiming
the Primary Experience of Childhood
from the Electronic River
Children spend more time with media than they
do in school, physical activity, sometimes even
sleeping. We have protected them from germs and
danger, but distanced them from nature, adventure,
imagination, and reflection. Pediatricians and
parents can help them reclaim a daring childhood,
optimizing development, building resilience, and
promoting health.
Faculty: Michael Rich, MD, MPH, FAAP
Sponsored by the Council on Communications and Media and
Section on Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics
Hollywood and Its Impact on Body Self-
Image—The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Jeff Vespa, a world-class photographer at the
Academy Awards, the Sundance Film Festival, and
Cannes, will bring along an actress friend and a
makeup artist. He will photograph her before and
after makeup is applied and show the audience
how digital photography is used in the mainstream
media to hide cosmetic flaws. In the 20-minute
makeup interval, Dr Vic Strasburger will give a
brief presentation on how current media may
affect teenagers’ body self-image.
W3038 $$ Advocacy 101: You Don’t
Have to Be Sanjay Gupta to Be on TV
(or Advocate for Kids)—It’s All About
Communication
Every day we help children and their families in our
pediatric practices. But sometimes we all need to
take that advocacy to a larger stage. Our communities
and government look to us as experts in child
health, and it is our job to speak up. Whether it be
the latest vaccine controversy, children’s health insurance,
or the obesity epidemic, there are a multitude
of topics that need our voices to put a “face” on the
story and to give accurate advice to the public and
those in elected positions.
S2118 Media Matters 2.0: Child Health in
the Information Age
This session will provide an overview of media
effects on children’s health, what can be done by
parents and society around this issue, and how clinicians
can integrate media into their care. Faculty will
review how media can contribute to outcomes such
as increased aggression, sexual risk behaviors, substance
use, and obesity, as well as positive social
behavior, tolerance, school readiness, and positive
self-image. This session will also provide clinicians
with the awareness and tools they need to educate
PLENARY SESSION
P4046 Children Do Well by Doing Good
in Their Communities
This session will explore how, through the vision
and direction of a pediatrician community, assets
can be leveraged to create an opportunity for
children to give of themselves. Physicians and
medical students provide role models for health
through this community service. The project that
will be presented is replicable or may simply serve
as an inspiration to develop similar giving opportunities
for children in other communities.
Faculty: Ronald Marino, DO, MPH, FAAP
Sponsored by the Committee on Adolescence, Council on
Community Pediatrics, and Section on Adolescent Health
