Research (Continued)
Saturday, October 2, 2010
8:00 am – 6:00 pm
C1002 PROS Coordinator Research
Program: Day 2
Participants will learn about studies being considered
for the network, offer feedback to the
principal investigator and PROS (Pediatric Research
in Office Settings) staff on new project proposals,
and hear project results as studies are completed.
Participants will also hear a specific continuing
medical education presentation in which the topic
is selected from an ongoing assessment of gaps
in participants’ primary care research knowledge
base. Past presentations have included topics such
as Electronic Health Records and Practice-Based
Research, Coordination of Care between Generalists
and Subspecialists, and Leveraging E-Learning
Technology in Physician and Patient Education.
PLENARY SESSION
11:30 am – 11:50 am
P3069 The Need for Kids in Clinical Trials
Children have often had to accept medicines
and treatments based on what is known to work
in adults. This “hand-me-down” approach shortchanges
children in terms of science, clinical
options, and treatment opportunities. Although
current legislation has been created to encourage
investigators and companies to include children in
clinical trials, one of the most influential persons
to encourage families to participate in clinical
trials is a child’s physician. This presentation will
review the need for children to participate in trials,
how children’s safety is protected in such studies,
and how such studies lead to new developments
and therapies for kids.
Tuesday, October 5, 2010
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
A4052 Don’t Believe Everything You Read:
Getting the Most Out of Journal Articles
Participants will review multiple examples of common
errors from pediatric journal articles. The examples
will teach participants how to be more discriminating
readers of research conclusions and statistics in
journal articles.
Faculty: Kristine Madsen, MD, MPH, FAAP; Thomas B
W1105 $$ Rheumatology Workshop for
the Pediatrician
Participants will have a brief formal presentation
and demonstration of a pediatric musculoskeletal
examination, with an emphasis on the findings seen
in the pediatric rheumatic diseases. They will then be
divided into groups and rotate through stations with
patients and facilitators to practice and reinforce
their skills. Each patient will emphasize a different
aspect of the examination and diagnostic issues.
Faculty: Aimee Hersh, MD; Diana Milojevic, MD
Sponsored by the Section on Rheumatology
F3057 Pediatric Bone Health: What Every
Pediatrician Needs to Know
➤➤
Repeats as F3123
The subject of bone metabolism and structure in
health and disease will be reviewed, including the
effects of various disease states, medications, diet,
environment, and physical activity, including the
relationship between the “adolescent triad.” Both
imaging and laboratory methods of assessing bone
health will be discussed, including the differences
between adult and pediatric parameters. Screening
and diagnostic testing will be reviewed as well as the
multiple ways to intervene preventively or therapeutically
as necessary.
Faculty: Laura Bachrach, MD, FAAP
F3062 Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA): New
Name, New Developments for an Old Disease
➤➤
Repeats as F4038
The classification schemes for chronic arthritis will
be described. The new information regarding the
genetics of arthritis and the clinical features of
macrophage activation syndrome will be explained.
A review of newer treatment options for children with
chronic arthritis will be presented.
S3117 The Tired, Achy Adolescent
➤➤
Repeats as S4062
Pediatricians are frequently confronted by adolescents
who are either overly tired, very sore and achy,
or degrees of both. The presenters will discuss the
various potential causes of chronic fatigue and debilitating
musculoskeletal pain and offer approaches to
the management of these vexing conditions.
S4032 Update on the Laboratory Evaluation
of Potential Rheumatic Diseases
The pediatric rheumatic diseases will be reviewed,
as will the laboratory profiles associated with them.
The various potential laboratory tests, both common
and obscure, will be discussed with an emphasis on
their utility and limitations. The clinical significance
of “positive” results will be reviewed and correlated
with need for additional testing, referral, or reassurance.
Participants will also learn about the concepts
and use of screening versus diagnostic testing as
well as a view on tests that may be used in the
future (eg, gene arrays, etc).
