The ELBW Infant: Can We Finally Decrease
Morbidity and Mortality
The morbidity and mortality of the early low birth
weight (ELBW) infant has not significantly improved
since the 1990s. In this series of state-of-the-art
lectures, the participant will learn about new information
that will impact the outcomes of the ELBW
infant. The speakers will present the latest information
on delivery room management, ventilator
management, and nutrition and fluid management;
the latest data on neuroimaging; and outcomes
of assisted reproductive technology and the premature
infant. Join us during the lunch break for
the Neonatal Career Development Seminar, Meet
the Committee on the Fetus and Newborn, and the
Section on Perinatal Pediatrics Business Meeting.
X3002 Follow-Up of the NICU Graduate:
Managing Oxygen Therapy at Home
Chronic lung disease of the premature infant
affects approximately 30% of preterm infants born
at less than 1000 grams. Most of these infants are
discharged home on oxygen, diuretics, etc. At the
end of this session, the general pediatrician will be
able to recognize the comorbidities associated with
infants with CLD (lower respiratory tract infections,
poor growth, etc); manage O2 needs, use of diuretics
and inhaled bronchodilators; and address their
nutritional needs.
Faculty: Sonia Imaizumi, MD, FAAP
Sponsored by the Section on Perinatal Pediatrics
8:30 am – 10:00 am
A3033 Interactive Neonatal Case Reviews
Selected questions from the NeoReviewsPlus
online self-assessment program will be presented
to the audience in a way to stimulate discussion
about important topics related to neonatal disease
and management. In addition to providing clinical
content, the value of this type of online experience
as a tool for continuing learning and fulfillment of
Maintenance of Certification requirements will be
stressed.
Faculty: William Engle, MD, FAAP; John Hartline, MD, FAAP
S3043 Beyond Newborn Hearing
Screening: Case Studies With Deaf and
Hard of Hearing Patients
This interactive session will present short vignettes
to participants related to hearing loss in infants. The
vignettes will cover a number of different situations,
and attendees will be involved in developing management
plans and diagnostic workups. The short cases
will promote audience interaction to enhance the
learning experience.
A3103 Common Problems in the Newborn
Nursery
The cases presented will include a number of common
problems seen in the newborn nursery, including
jaundice, skin lesions, infection risks, screening tests,
and others. An emphasis will be placed on prioritizing
problems that require immediate additional evaluation
as opposed to those needing close follow-up. An
audience response system will be used to engage
the audience in open discussion of these problems.
How Much of a Workup Is needed
➤➤
Repeats as S2038
This session will discuss the definitions of normal
blood pressure, prehypertension, and hypertension.
The use of the blood pressure lookup tables will be
illustrated, including elimination of a manual lookup
by using a computer, iPhone, or PDA. Case vignettes
will be used to illustrate the varied scenarios that
might be encountered by the pediatrician. The use of
an ambulatory blood pressure monitor will be illustrated
F2094 Blood or Protein in the Urine: How
Much of a Workup Is Needed
➤➤
Repeats as F2127
Before proceeding with expensive and possibly invasive
testing, there are clinical indicators of higher
risk for a potentially serious disorder that pediatricians
can use to make a decision about how far to
go in doing further testing. The faculty will provide
examples of the kind of discourse the pediatrician
might have with a parent about positive findings to
ensure that the parent understands the importance
of a potentially serious kidney problem and the need
to delve further if indicated.
