C0008 $$ Global Efforts in Addressing
Child Health Needs in Disasters
Pediatricians in the United States and the AAP
have become increasingly involved in responding
to humanitarian crises outside the borders of the
United States and advising developing and developed
countries on ways to increase preparedness
for children’s needs during a disaster. The AAP has
formed the Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council,
which has been looking at these issues. The AAP
Office of International Affairs has developed a pediatric
disaster preparedness course that has been
taught in Latin America, Asia, and North America.
The Section on International Child Health has also
taken on advocacy and disaster preparedness
efforts in many countries. Most pediatricians are
unaware of these efforts, even though there is an
increasing need to engage US pediatricians in such
preparedness and response efforts and a growing
interest among US pediatricians to provide global
relief services.
This session will raise awareness to the unique
physical and psychological needs of children during
disasters, discuss the ongoing AAP movement in
assisting pediatric societies around the world, and
present local disaster preparedness efforts by pediatrician
leaders from Latin America and Asia.
