Just For Fun
A Chance to Just Be Me

Every year, around this time,
My old heart fills with glee,
For finally I get a chance:
A chance to just be me.
So long I’ve hidden who I am
‘Neath makeup and nice clothes,
But now at last I can reveal
This big wart on my nose.
I’ll let loose all my dark grey hair:
It’s long and thick and wild.
Atop it all I’ll place a hat,
Designed to scare a child.
Upon my feet go worn old boots
Made from the skin of bats.
I’ve dyed them black and laced them with
The braided tails of rats.
My dress is long and dank with age;
It needs a few deft stitches.
My cape is still a masterpiece:
The envy of all witches.
And finally, I’ll get my broom;
It’s hidden in the shed.
Don’t think I plan to sweep the porch.
I’ll fly the skies instead!
Oh, cloudy night with slivered moon.
Oh, leafless, windless scene.
I yearn to mount my trusty broom.
I yearn to be real mean.
I yearn to scare the kiddies
As they all go, “Trick or treat.”
They mock the eve of Halloween
For all they do is eat.
Those silly tots don’t realize
That Halloween is scary.
We witches, warlocks, bats and wolves
Just love to be contrary.
For once a year we get to show
Our scary, ugly faces.
It’s such a joy to make kids scream
In all our favorite places.
