The Dark Side
Red Heart of Night
Irene Livingston
Small black fears tap-tap on windows,
hungry bats. Bone-lonely walls
edge in closer. Forlorn ceiling
lowers as the darkness falls.
Children sleeping, clock tick-ticking.
Cupboard spreads itself apart,
tilts its handle down, alluring,
shows its warm red liquid heart.
She is weary of resisting.
Walls move forward, wanly shine,
push her slowly to the lustrous
ruby kisses of the wine.
Fluid ardor strokes her senses,
lubricates her frozen soul;
Still it fails to keep its promise:
sate her body, make her whole.
Now the drum of music pulses
in her breast, still uncaressed,
in her feet, still bound and danceless
throbbing with a joy repressed.
Streetlights hover near the windows,
stand obscenely peering in,
while the door falls slyly open
in a wide, salacious grin.
