Then and Now
Playing Poet
Aaron Wilkinson
When I was born my only play
Were games my parents knew.
They entertained my early days
With Bounce and Peek-a-boo.
When Cradle games became too tame
Experience converged,
Imagination lent a hand,
A wilder child emerged.
Between a panicked throng of folk
And certain, utter doom
I vanquished scores of teddy bears
From safe within my room.
A cane became my trusty sword
Of keen enchanted blade
And I a knight of true renown
Who enemies dismayed.
The broom became my charger bold,
A true and noble steed,
To carry me to Antioch
And slay the Pagan seed.
My mother didn’t understand
What all the screaming meant.
She took my gear away from me
And left me to repent.
And thus bereft of cane and broom
For lack of some restraint
I took my hellish punishment
Without the least complaint.
I’d carry on the grand crusade
With pen and paper next
And vowed to play the cloistered monk
Illuminating text.
The end result was passing fair,
Or so it seemed to me.
In fact I still recall the lines
That passed for poetry:
“I may be here forever more
Forgotten, shut away,
But now, at least, I’ve learned enough
To silence when I play.”
