The Transformer and<br />

AC Power<br />

Described briefly in Chapter 2, the term alternating current<br />

(abbreviated AC) refers <strong>to</strong> current flow that periodically<br />

changes direction. This condition is related <strong>to</strong> the<br />

periodic changes in the polarity of the applied voltage.<br />

Alternating voltage and current are very important<br />

because of a phenomenon known as transformer action.<br />

Transformer action enables the efficient transmission of<br />

large quantities of power over long distances. This is why<br />

all common household current is AC.<br />
