NVQ Diploma (Level 1) 

Hairdressing & Barbering 

Offered at both our Yeovil and Shaftesbury 

campuses, this course will help you develop 

a practical understanding of the underlying 

principles and skills required to work in the 

Hairdressing industry. It has been designed 

using the National Occupational Standards in 

Hairdressing to give a platform from which to 

prepare for employment or further training. 

You will also complete a Creative Craft award 

in Hairdressing as part of this course. 

Entry Requirements 

You must have a proven interest in the Hairdressing industry 

and successfully complete an interview and trade test to join 

this course. Although the course is suitable for those who have 

completed Salon Services or Hair & Beauty Study courses, no 

prior experience of Hairdressing is required. 

Course Expenses 

Kit (includes everything you will need to complete the course) - 

£210. Uniform - £90. Students are required to be in uniform and 

have their full kit for all sessions. 

Work Experience 

You will complete a two week work placement at a local salon. 

Trips/Residentials 

Trips to hair shows and trade fairs may be arranged. Students 

are encouraged to get involved in the National Hairdressers 

Federation competition at local and regional level. 

Career Prospects/Progression 

On the successful completion of this course, you are encouraged 

to progress on to the one year Diploma (Level 2) in Women’s 

Hairdressing. This will allow you to consolidate your practical skills 

and ensure your readiness for employment.

VRQ Diploma (Level 2) 

Women’s Hairdressing 


Hairdressing 

This course will help you develop a practical 

understanding of the underlying principles and

This course will prepare you for employment 

in the Hair industry. It covers every aspect of 

working in a professional salon as a stylist. 

During this course, you will be based in one 

of our well-equipped and highly professional 

Hair salons at either Yeovil College or the North 

Dorset Technical College. The course covers 

topics including Health & Safety, Advising & 

Consulting Clients, Cutting Hair Using Basic 

Techniques, Shampooing, Conditioning & Hair 

Colouring. The course consists of about 60% 

practical training and assessment and 40% 

theory, including tutorials. 


You need to have successfully completed the VRQ Diploma 

(Level 2) in Hairdressing or a Young Apprenticeship in 

Hairdressing to join this course. You also need a good standard 

of written work, Science-based, English and Maths qualifications 

and a good working knowledge of IT/Word processing. 

Personal qualities are important such as good self-organisation. 


Kit (includes everything you will need to complete the course)

and have their full kit for all sessions. 


You will complete a two-week block placement as part of 

your course. 


You will have the opportunity to go on trips. Destinations vary 

each year, but previous trips have included visits to trade shows,

This course is designed for students who 

have already achieved a Level 2 Hairdressing 

qualification and worked in industry, but 

would like to develop their skills further for a 

supervisory or management role. You will have 

the opportunity to cover a range of topic areas, 

including Product Promotion, Health & Safety, 

Hairdressing Consultation Services and How to 

Creatively Cut Hair with a Variety of Techniques. 

Assessment will take place in one of our stateof-the-art 

salons. There is also an opportunity to 

complete an Award in Cutting Men’s Hair as part 

of this course. 


You must have a NVQ (Level 2) Hairdressing qualification and 

relevant experience to join this course. 


Full Kit (if not purchased for an earlier course) - £210. Top Up Kit 

(if you have already bought the full kit) - £120. Uniform - £90. 

Students are required to be in uniform and have their complete 

kit for all sessions. 


You will undertake paid or unpaid work experience for one day a 

week in a salon. 


There are opportunities to visit industry fairs as part of this 

course. Previous destinations include Salon International events 

in London and the Wella Hair Show in Paris. 


Following successful completion of this course, you can apply for 

management or supervisory roles in the Hairdressing industry. 

If you are interested in developing your business skills, you can 

apply for a Level 4 Business Management course, such as those 

available at the University Centre Yeovil (UCY). 


Intermediate Apprenticeship/ 

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3) 


On this course you will develop the necessary 

skills and experience to work in the Hairdressing 

industry as a stylist. While at College, you will be 

based in one of our modern hair salons, giving 

you the opportunity to develop and enhance your 

practical skills in a realistic working environment 

and practise your creativity under the supervision 

of highly experienced and qualified teaching staff. 

Both courses promote teamwork, good personal 

conduct and professionalism. 


For Level 2, you need three grade Cs or above at GCSE, including 

Maths and English, NVQ Level 1 or a Certificate in Salon Services 

at Credit or Distinction level. For Level 3, you need NVQ (Level 2) 

in Hairdressing or equivalent. 


Kit (includes everything you will need to complete the course) - 

£210. Uniform - £90. Students are required to be in uniform and 

have their full kit for all sessions. 


If you successfully complete the Intermediate Apprenticeship, 

then you will be qualified to work in a salon as a junior stylist. If 

you complete the Level 3, Advanced Apprenticeship, you will 

be able to enter into a supervisory, trainee management or head 

stylist role. You may like to undertake some further training in 

other, complementary disciplines, such as Business. 


Beauty Therapy 

This qualification is designed as an introduction to 

the Beauty sector for anyone hoping to eventually 

train as a Beauty Therapist. It provides you with 

an opportunity to develop basic techniques in 

manicures, pedicures and skin care. Areas covered 

include Presenting a Professional Image in a 

Salon, Hand Care, Nail Art, Skin Care, Basic 

Make Up and Themed Face Painting/Photographic 

Make Up. The course is taught alongside 

Functional Skills and Personal Social Development. 


You need no prior experience for this course, but you must have a 

proven interest in the Beauty industry and successfully complete 

a trade test and formal interview process. You must also have 

a good level of personal hygiene, personal presentation and 

professional behaviours, in keeping with standards expected in a 

professional salon environment. Attendance at all sessions is vital 

to complete all the units and gain the full qualification. 


Personalised equipment, e.g. brushes etc, and consumables - 

approximately £40. Uniform and kit – approximately £170. 


Successful completion of this course will provide a 

progression route to the NVQ Diploma (Level 2) in Beauty 

Therapy or alternatively, you could consider a relevant 

Intermediate Apprenticeship.

Beauty Therapy (General) 


Beauty Therapy (General) 

This course is ideal if you would like to begin 

initial training for a career in the Beauty Therapy 

industry. During this course, you will develop 

a comprehensive range of practical skills and 

theoretical knowledge covering Health & 

Safety, Facial Skincare, Waxing, Manicures, 

Pedicures, Eye Treatments, Ear Piercing, 

Makeup Application and Reception Duties. 

Students will also take advantage of a range 

of supplementary courses including Fake Bake. 

You will also benefit from professional courses 

related to salon products including Hara 

Skincare, Environ Skincare, OPI Nailcare and 

Jane Iredale mineral make-up. The NVQ 

Diploma is offered at both Yeovil College 

and the North Dorset Technical College. 


You need GCSE English and Science at grade C or above and 

GCSE Maths at grade D or above, as well as a good level of 

literacy. Enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to the course 

are essential for success. 


Uniform and kit (including textbooks) - approximately £500. 

Consumables - £40. There will also be charges associated 

with additional training courses. European residential (optional) 

- approximately £400. 


You will complete one compulsory week of work experience. 


There is an optional, annual residential to a European country 

where you can experience the spa and beauty therapy 

treatments available in another culture. 


On the successful completion of this course, you can progress 

on to the NVQ Diploma (Level 3) Beauty Therapy (General). 

This qualification is based on National Occupation 

Standards for Beauty Therapy and is designed 

for students who wish to advance within the 

profession or have ambitions to manage or own a 

salon. During this course, you will build upon the 

skills and competence gained at Level 2, so that 

you develop into a highly proficient, competent 

and professional Beauty Therapist. In addition, 

you will learn a range of advanced treatment 

techniques, including electrical face and body 

treatments, electrolysis, eyelash extensions and 

body massage. You can also complete additional 

training in specialist treatments and products, such 

as the ‘Standing Tall Workshop’, bust profiling, 

intimate waxing and Fake Bake Spray Tanning. 


You must have successfully completed the NVQ Diploma (Level 2) 

Beauty Therapy or equivalent qualification to join this course. 


Kit (including textbook and uniform) – approximately £450. 

Uniform - £80. Consumables – approximately £40. Residential 

(optional) – approximately £400. There may be additional costs 

associated with the specialist training courses. 


You must complete two separate weeks of work experience. 


There is an opportunity to attend a residential trip at a European 

resort, where you will experience spa and therapy treatments 

from a different cultural perspective. 


If you successfully complete this qualification, you will have 

the necessary understanding and skills to work as a senior 

beauty therapist or salon manager. You can also consider 

self-employment as a beauty therapist. If you wish to develop 

your skills further, you can take additional, specialist vocational 

qualifications at Level 3 or Level 4.

City & Guilds Diploma (Level 1) 

Introduction to 

Professional Cookery 

This course is suitable for you if your goal is to 

work in the Hospitality & Catering industry and you 

want to begin professional training. During 

this course you will be introduced to the Hospitality 

& Catering industry, food preparation and cooking 

skills, healthier food and special diets, food 

safety, health & safety awareness, equipment, 

introduction to workplace skills, 

food and beverage service skills, customer 

care, team working and communication. 


You need a good level of English and Maths, a passion for 

developing practical skills and knowledge and to be well organised 

and motivated.

There are opportunities for work experience with a wide 

range of local and national catering establishments. 


Students who successfully complete this qualification and gain 

a good Merit profile may be able to progress to the City & Guilds 

Diploma in Professional Cookery or the City & Guilds Diploma in 

Food & Beverage Services. Alternatively, you can apply for 

an Apprenticeship or employment in the industry. 



This course, supported by the Craft Guild of Chefs 

and designed with the help of the Hospitality 

industry, develops on skills you learn during the 

Introductory Diploma course. You will learn about 

all aspects of food preparation and cooking to 

help you pursue your chef training. You will learn 

techniques to prepare, cook and serve meat, fish, 

vegetables and pastry dishes, together with how 

to plan menus effectively, taking into account 

nutrition, cultural influences and food trends. 


There are opportunities for work experience available across a 

wide range of catering establishments. 


Upon successful completion of this qualification, you may like 

to progress to a related Level 3 course, such as an Advanced 

Apprenticeship or the Advanced Diploma in Professional Cookery. 


You must have at least three GCSEs at A* to D grade, preferably 

including English and Maths. You must also have an Introductory 

Diploma in Professional Cookery and/or relevant experience of 

working in the catering industry.

City & Guilds Advanced Diploma 

(Level 3) Professional Cookery 

This qualification is ideal for students wanting to 

gain the skills needed to deliver a great dining 

experience to customers. You will learn essential 

skills in areas like Food Safety, Handling Payments 

& Bookings and Serving Food & Beverages. 

Areas covered at this level also include Bar Service, 

Table Theatre (Gueridon) and Menu Design.

You must have at least three GCSEs at A* to D grade, 

preferably including English and Maths, or a Certificate in 

Food & Beverage Services and/or relevant experience of 

working in the Catering industry. 







There are opportunities for work experience available

Upon successful completion of this course, you may like 

to progress to a related Level 3 course, such as an 

Advanced Apprenticeship or the Diploma in Food & Beverage 

Service Supervision. 

This course allows you to learn and practice 

advanced cookery techniques and a range of kitchen 

and pastry skills in our modern and professional 

training kitchen and restaurant. You will be able to 

develop the skills you need to supervise a team, 

create and monitor food safety management 

systems. In gastronomy, the emphasis will be on 

the principles of the dining experience. 


You must have at least three GCSEs at A* to C grade, preferably 

including English and Maths. You must also have a VRQ Diploma 

in Professional Cookery or relevant experience of working in a 

professional kitchen at a supervisory level. 







There are opportunities for work experience available across a

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) 

Food & Beverage Service 

This Apprenticeship will help you to develop skills 

in a number of areas including Safe & Hygienic 

Working Practices, Food Service & Beverage 

Service Techniques and Customer Service Skills. 

The course is aimed at students working in the 

industry and will help you learn, develop and 

practice the skills required in a range of Hospitality 

environments. Through the course, you will 

also develop creative thinking, numerical and 

communication skills, as well as an understanding 

of employer rights and responsibilities. 


You must have GCSE English and Maths at grade D and will need 

to pass an interview. You also need to be employed in the Food & 

Beverage Service sector or about to start an appropriate role. 


Successful completion of this course could allow you to take a 

Level 3 qualification, such as the Advanced Apprenticeship in 

Hospitality Supervision & Leadership, which would prepare you 

for employment in a supervisory role. 


Hospitality Services 

This course is designed for students working in the 

Hospitality industry who have a variety of duties 

encompassing food production support, food 

and beverage service, housekeeping and general 

customer service. You can take units across a 

range of services, focussing on either a cooking 

or non-cooking pathway. 


You need at least GCSE English and Maths at grade D. You will 

also need to pass an interview and to work in the Hospitality 

Services industry, or have the offer of appropriate employment. 


Housekeeping 

The Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) in 

Housekeeping is aimed at students currently 

working in the industry or about to accept work 

in the general Housekeeping environment. 

This course will help you to develop your skills 

in a number of key areas, including Cleaning 

& Maintaining Floors, Maintaining Supplies, 

Cleaning Windows, using Chemicals in 

Housekeeping and Customer Service. 


You need at least grade D in GCSE English and Maths. You will 

also have to pass an interview and either be working or about to 

start work in the industry. 


Successful completion of this Apprenticeship could allow you 

to take a related Advanced course, such as the Hospitality 

Supervision & Leadership Apprenticeship, which is suitable for 

those working towards a supervisory position. 


If you successfully complete this qualification, you could progress 

to a Level 3 course, such as an Advanced Apprenticeship in 

Hospitality Supervision & Leadership, which would suit those 

looking to move into a supervisory role. 


Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) 

Hospitality Supervision & 

Leadership 




This course complements any of the Intermediate 

Hospitality Apprenticeships. It is designed for 

students interested in working in a supervisory 

role. You will develop skills and knowledge in 

areas including the Hospitality industry, the 

competitive environment, team leadership, 

communicating effectively with customers and 

managerial administration. At Advanced level, 

topics of study are agreed with the Programme 

Leader. This course is designed for students 

currently in the working environment and will 

give you the opportunity to learn, develop and 

practice the skills you need to make an effective 

contribution to the business at an advanced level. 


You need a Level 2, Vocational Hospitality qualification and 

Level 1 Functional Skills or equivalent in English and Maths. 

You will also have to pass an interview and must be employed 

in an advanced supervisory role by the start of your course. 


If you successfully complete this course, you could progress 

to a Higher Apprenticeship linked to a Foundation degree in 

Hospitality Management. 

These Apprenticeships will help you develop your 

skills in a number of areas, including; cookery, 

Food Hygiene and Kitchen Safety. At Intermediate 

level, you will learn to prepare and cook basic 

dishes, including soup, fish, meat, poultry and 

vegetables. The Advanced Apprenticeship allows 

students to build upon this training and develop 

their cooking skills further so that they can 

produce more complex dishes, as well as fresh 

pasta dishes and hot and cold desserts. Both 

qualifications are designed for students operating 

in a working environment and aim to give you 

the skills to make an effective contribution to a 

professional kitchen. 


For the Intermediate Apprenticeship, you need GCSE English and 

Maths at grade D or above. At Advanced level, you need to have 

Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths, or an 

equivalent, and evidence of Level 2 Professional Cookery skills. 

For both courses, you will also need to pass an interview and 

either work in a food preparation or cooking role or have an offer 

to begin working in this area before the start of your course. 


Successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship means 

you can apply for a Level 3 qualification, such as the Advanced 

Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery. If you complete the 

Advanced Apprenticeship, you could progress to a Higher 

Apprenticeship linked with a Foundation degree in Culinary Arts 

or another relevant Level 3 qualification. If you are interested in 

moving to a supervisory role, you can apply for the Advanced 

Apprenticeship in Hospitality Supervision & Leadership from 

either Professional Cookery Apprenticeship.

BTEC Extended Diploma (Level 3) 

Music 

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Music offers 

a practical insight into the workings of the 

modern Music industry. If you have a keen 

interest in popular music, can play an instrument 

or have experience of music technology, this 

course will help you develop your skills in a 

practical environment. The course offers you 

the opportunity to explore the development of 

popular music and the Music industry through 

performance, composition, recording and 

promotion. The course encompasses 

Songwriting, Arranging, Music Theory & 

Harmony, Popular Music History, Acoustics, 

Concert Production, Live Sound, Marketing, 

Recording & Production Techniques and 

Performance Aspects. You also have the option 

to study ABRSM Music Theory grades. As well 

as performing regular live gigs, you will also have 

the opportunity to promote and crew external 

local music events. All students will work in bands 

throughout the course and perform approximately 

every four to six weeks. 


You need five GCSEs at grade C or above. Ideally, you will 

also need to play a musical instrument to Grade 3 level 

and have experience of music technology application and 

musical composition. 


Music theory books, exam entries, consumable media and 

equipment maintenance - £90. You need to provide your 

own headphones, instruments and associated leads. 

Backline is provided. 


This course is designed to deliver a balanced curriculum which 

develops not just your performance and composition skills, but 

also technological ability, which is highly valued by the Music 

sector. Many students progress to Higher Education, completing 

courses such as Foundation degrees, Higher National Diplomas 

and full Honours degrees in a range of Music-related subjects, 

such as Popular Music, Production, Music Technology, Sonic Art 

and Music Journalism. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to 

three A Levels and is widely accepted by universities.

BTEC Diploma (Level 2) 

Performing Arts 

This course allows you to develop a broad-based 

knowledge, understanding and experience of the 

Performing Arts, including Music, Dance, Drama, 

Musical Theatre and Technical Theatre. There is 

an emphasis on group work within this course. 

You will be working to develop your confidence, 

responsibility, reliability and teamwork skills to help 

you become a valuable team member in preparation 

for your final Diploma show. The course also puts 

the Performing Arts industry in context by 

examining current professional practice. 


You should have at least one GCSE at grade D or above. A basic 

ability to work as a team and an enthusiasm for the Performing 

Arts are essential, as is a willingness to be open to new ideas. 

A basic ability in communication, Numeracy and Information 

Technology would be an advantage. 


Trips and workshops - £30. 


You will have the opportunity to see high quality regional and 

national productions around the country, including London 

West End shows. 


Students who achieve a Merit or Distinction in this course can 

progress to a Level 3 qualification, such as a BTEC Extended 

Diploma in a related area, or an A Level programme. 



This course develops knowledge, understanding and 

experience of the Performing Arts, including Dance, 

Drama, Design, Music, Technical Theatre and Arts 

Administration. The course also puts the Performing 

Arts in context by teaching the historical, political 

and financial aspects. You will develop valuable 

teamwork skills which you will use to turn your 

group into a successful performance company. Each 

year you will be involved in two major productions 

and many smaller scale performances. This includes 

the annual College production, which traditionally 

takes place at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil. You will 

also have the opportunity to work with professional 

touring companies visiting Yeovil College. 


Standard entry requirements for a Level 3 course apply. You will 

also have to undertake an audition process or present a portfolio 

of design/stagecraft projects you have worked on.

BTEC Extended Certificate (Level 2) 

Information Technology 

This course will give you a foundation in 

Information Technology. It aims to provide you 

with both practical skills and a knowledge base 

to be used in IT applications. It will also give you 

the opportunity to develop the personal skills 

needed in the workplace. The course provides 

a firm foundation in presenting information and 

use of IT in communication. 


GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade D or above, 

although other qualifications or experience may be taken 

into consideration. 


Memory stick, books, stationery - £30. There may be 

additional costs for educational visits. 


This course is good preparation if you intend to continue 

your training at Level 3. Achieving a Distinction in the BTEC 

Extended Certificate may allow you to join the BTEC Extended 

Diploma (Level 3) in IT when considered in conjunction with 

other qualifications you may have achieved. 


Information Technology 

This course will give you a sound foundation 

in Information Technology. It aims to provide 

you with both practical skills and a knowledge 

base to be used in IT applications and software 

development. It will also give you the opportunity 

to develop the personal skills needed in the 

workplace. The course provides a firm foundation 

in presenting information and use of IT in 

communication, an introduction to computer 

systems and a foundation in programming, 

computer games and website development. 


GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade D, although other 

qualifications or experience may be taken into consideration. 


You need a USB memory stick that can hold at least 1GB for 

storing work that you will be working on at home. 


This course is good preparation if you intend to enter a BTEC 

Extended Diploma (Level 3) course. Achieving a Distinction in 

the BTEC Diploma will allow you to enter the BTEC Extended

IT Users 

These Apprenticeships provide you with the

Relations, Programming, Systems Analysis 

and Database Management. The Advanced 

Apprenticeship develops skills learned at Level 2 

and also prepares you for managing ICT systems. 


For the Intermediate Apprenticeship, you need GCSE Maths 

and English at grade D or above, along with a suitable work 

placement. To join the Advanced course, you need GCSE 

Maths and English at grade C or above and a work placement. 


You may need to purchase unit-specific books. 


If you successfully complete the Intermediate Apprenticeship, 

you may progress to the Advanced course. Successful 

completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship could lead to a 

Foundation degree, such as those available at the University 

Centre Yeovil (UCY). 

This qualification is designed to give you the 

required skills to succeed as an IT user. 

The course is assessed in the workplace 

through evidence provided through your job. 

At Intermediate level, you will complete

(Forensic Science) 

This course is ideal for those of you wanting 

to study Science to become a professional 

scientist in the future. This course offers a “real 

Science” qualification, focused on the real world, 

real scientists and real jobs, including Forensic 

Science. This is a very practical course in which 

you learn Science skills by completing projects and 

assignments based on realistic workplace activities. 


You need GCSE at grade C or above in Maths, English Language 

and Science. You must be able to express yourself clearly, have 

good self-organisational skills and have reasonable numerical skills.
