Offered at both our <strong>Yeovil</strong> and Shaftesbury<br />

campuses, this course will help you develop<br />

a practical understanding of the underlying<br />

principles and skills required to work in the<br />

<strong>Hair</strong>dressing industry. It has been designed<br />

using the National Occupational Standards in<br />

<strong>Hair</strong>dressing to give a platform from which to<br />

prepare for employment or further training.<br />

You will also complete a Creative Craft award<br />

in <strong>Hair</strong>dressing as part of this course.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You must have a proven interest in the <strong>Hair</strong>dressing industry<br />

and successfully complete an interview and trade test to join<br />

this course. Although the course is suitable for those who have<br />

completed Salon Services or <strong>Hair</strong> & <strong>Beauty</strong> Study courses, no<br />

prior experience of <strong>Hair</strong>dressing is required.<br />

This course will help you develop a practical<br />

Dorset Technical <strong>College</strong>. The course covers<br />

topics including Health & Safety, Advising &<br />

Consulting Clients, Cutting <strong>Hair</strong> Using Basic<br />

Techniques, Shampooing, Conditioning & <strong>Hair</strong><br />

Colouring. The course consists of about 60%<br />

practical training and assessment and 40%<br />

theory, including tutorials.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You need to have successfully completed the VRQ Diploma<br />

(Level 2) in <strong>Hair</strong>dressing or a Young Apprenticeship in<br />

<strong>Hair</strong>dressing to join this course. You also need a good standard<br />

of written work, Science-based, English and Maths qualifications<br />

and a good working knowledge of IT/Word processing.<br />

Personal qualities are important such as good self-organisation.<br />

<strong>Hair</strong>dressing<br />

This course is designed for students who<br />

have already achieved a Level 2 <strong>Hair</strong>dressing<br />

qualification and worked in industry, but<br />

would like to develop their skills further for a<br />

supervisory or management role. You will have<br />

the opportunity to cover a range of topic areas,<br />

including Product Promotion, Health & Safety,<br />

<strong>Hair</strong>dressing Consultation Services and How to<br />

Creatively Cut <strong>Hair</strong> with a Variety of Techniques.<br />

Assessment will take place in one of our stateof-the-art<br />

salons. There is also an opportunity to<br />

complete an Award in Cutting Men’s <strong>Hair</strong> as part<br />

of this course.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You must have a NVQ (Level 2) <strong>Hair</strong>dressing qualification and<br />

relevant experience to join this course.<br />

Full Kit (if not purchased for an earlier course) - £210. Top Up Kit<br />

Intermediate Apprenticeship/<br />

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 2/3)<br />

<strong>Hair</strong>dressing<br />

On this course you will develop the necessary<br />

skills and experience to work in the <strong>Hair</strong>dressing<br />

industry as a stylist. While at <strong>College</strong>, you will be<br />

based in one of our modern hair salons, giving<br />

you the opportunity to develop and enhance your<br />

practical skills in a realistic working environment<br />

and practise your creativity under the supervision<br />

of highly experienced and qualified teaching staff.<br />

Both courses promote teamwork, good personal<br />

conduct and professionalism.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

For Level 2, you need three grade Cs or above at GCSE, including<br />

Maths and English, NVQ Level 1 or a Certificate in Salon Services<br />

at Credit or Distinction level. For Level 3, you need NVQ (Level 2)<br />

in <strong>Hair</strong>dressing or equivalent.<br />

Career Prospects/Progression<br />

If you successfully complete the Intermediate Apprenticeship,<br />

then you will be qualified to work in a salon as a junior stylist. If<br />

you complete the Level 3, Advanced Apprenticeship, you will<br />

be able to enter into a supervisory, trainee management or head<br />

stylist role. You may like to undertake some further training in<br />

other, complementary disciplines, such as Business.<br />

NVQ Diploma (Level 1)<br />

<strong>Beauty</strong> Therapy<br />

This qualification is designed as an introduction to<br />

the <strong>Beauty</strong> sector for anyone hoping to eventually<br />

train as a <strong>Beauty</strong> Therapist. It provides you with<br />

an opportunity to develop basic techniques in<br />

manicures, pedicures and skin care. Areas covered<br />

include Presenting a Professional Image in a<br />

Salon, Hand Care, Nail Art, Skin Care, Basic<br />

Make Up and Themed Face Painting/Photographic<br />

Make Up. The course is taught alongside<br />

Functional Skills and Personal Social Development.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You need no prior experience for this course, but you must have a<br />

proven interest in the <strong>Beauty</strong> industry and successfully complete<br />

a trade test and formal interview process. You must also have<br />

a good level of personal hygiene, personal presentation and<br />

professional behaviours, in keeping with standards expected in a<br />

professional salon environment. Attendance at all sessions is vital<br />

to complete all the units and gain the full qualification.<br />

<strong>Beauty</strong> Therapy (General)<br />

This course is ideal if you would like to begin<br />

initial training for a career in the <strong>Beauty</strong> Therapy<br />

industry. During this course, you will develop<br />

a comprehensive range of practical skills and<br />

theoretical knowledge covering Health &<br />

Safety, Facial Skincare, Waxing, Manicures,<br />

Pedicures, Eye Treatments, Ear Piercing,<br />

Makeup Application and Reception Duties.<br />

Students will also take advantage of a range<br />

of supplementary courses including Fake Bake.<br />

You will also benefit from professional courses<br />

related to salon products including Hara<br />

Skincare, Environ Skincare, OPI Nailcare and<br />

Jane Iredale mineral make-up. The NVQ<br />

Diploma is offered at both <strong>Yeovil</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

This qualification is based on National Occupation<br />

Standards for <strong>Beauty</strong> Therapy and is designed<br />

for students who wish to advance within the<br />

profession or have ambitions to manage or own a<br />

salon. During this course, you will build upon the<br />

skills and competence gained at Level 2, so that<br />

you develop into a highly proficient, competent<br />

and professional <strong>Beauty</strong> Therapist. In addition,<br />

you will learn a range of advanced treatment<br />

techniques, including electrical face and body<br />

treatments, electrolysis, eyelash extensions and<br />

This course, supported by the Craft Guild of Chefs<br />

and designed with the help of the Hospitality<br />

Introductory Diploma course. You will learn about<br />

all aspects of food preparation and cooking to<br />

help you pursue your chef training. You will learn<br />

techniques to prepare, cook and serve meat, fish,<br />

vegetables and pastry dishes, together with how<br />

to plan menus effectively, taking into account<br />

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2)<br />

Food & Beverage Service<br />

This Apprenticeship will help you to develop skills<br />

in a number of areas including Safe & Hygienic<br />

Working Practices, Food Service & Beverage<br />

Service Techniques and Customer Service Skills.<br />

The course is aimed at students working in the<br />

industry and will help you learn, develop and<br />

practice the skills required in a range of Hospitality<br />

environments. Through the course, you will<br />

also develop creative thinking, numerical and<br />

communication skills, as well as an understanding<br />

of employer rights and responsibilities.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You must have GCSE English and Maths at grade D and will need<br />

to pass an interview. You also need to be employed in the Food &<br />

This course is designed for students working in the<br />

Housekeeping<br />

The Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) in<br />

Housekeeping is aimed at students currently<br />

in a number of key areas, including Cleaning<br />

& Maintaining Floors, Maintaining Supplies,<br />

Professional Cookery<br />

This course complements any of the Intermediate<br />

Hospitality Apprenticeships. It is designed for<br />

students interested in working in a supervisory<br />

role. You will develop skills and knowledge in<br />

areas including the Hospitality industry, the<br />

competitive environment, team leadership,<br />

communicating effectively with customers and<br />

managerial administration. At Advanced level,<br />

topics of study are agreed with the Programme<br />

Leader. This course is designed for students<br />

currently in the working environment and will<br />

give you the opportunity to learn, develop and<br />

practice the skills you need to make an effective<br />

contribution to the business at an advanced level.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You need a Level 2, Vocational Hospitality qualification and<br />

Level 1 Functional Skills or equivalent in English and Maths.<br />

You will also have to pass an interview and must be employed<br />

in an advanced supervisory role by the start of your course.<br />

Career Prospects/Progression<br />

If you successfully complete this course, you could progress<br />

to a Higher Apprenticeship linked to a Foundation degree in<br />

These Apprenticeships will help you develop your<br />

skills in a number of areas, including; cookery,<br />

Food Hygiene and Kitchen Safety. At Intermediate<br />

level, you will learn to prepare and cook basic<br />

dishes, including soup, fish, meat, poultry and<br />

vegetables. The Advanced Apprenticeship allows<br />

students to build upon this training and develop<br />

their cooking skills further so that they can<br />

produce more complex dishes, as well as fresh<br />

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Music offers<br />

a practical insight into the workings of the<br />

modern Music industry. If you have a keen<br />

interest in popular music, can play an instrument<br />

or have experience of music technology, this<br />

course will help you develop your skills in a<br />

practical environment. The course offers you<br />

the opportunity to explore the development of<br />

popular music and the Music industry through<br />

Sport & Exercise Science<br />

This qualification provides industry-recognised<br />

occupational standards and is designed as a<br />

work-related qualification, focussed on developing<br />

your practical skills and underpinning Sport<br />

knowledge. Alongside your Diploma, you will be<br />

able to take the Community Sports Leadership<br />

Award and a First Aid qualification in your first<br />

year. During the second year, you can complete<br />

the Higher Sports Leadership Award and you<br />

will be encouraged to obtain at least one national<br />

governing body award in a specific sport.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You need at least six GCSEs at grade C or above. These must<br />

include English Language, Science and Maths. You also need<br />

to demonstrate a keen interest in studying and show a proven<br />

Entry to the Uniformed<br />

Public Services – NEW<br />

This course aims to give students with an<br />

interest in Uniformed Public Services an<br />

opportunity to explore this area of employment<br />

whilst developing relevant personal and practical<br />

abilities. During this course, you will develop<br />

attributes and skills such as teamworking,<br />

self-belief and good timekeeping, as well as<br />

English and Maths skills. You will also complete<br />

qualifications including the Junior Sports<br />

Leadership Award and the NCFE Award (Level 1)<br />

in Outdoor Development, which will help you<br />

develop leadership and basic outdoor navigation<br />

and survival skills, and have the opportunity to<br />

complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award.<br />

During this course, you will learn a range of<br />

This one year course consists of six specialist<br />

mini-courses each focusing on a specific career<br />

Introduction to the Passenger Shipping Industry,<br />

Employment Awareness in Active Leisure &<br />

Learning and Principles of Customer Service in<br />

leaders BMI and Thomas Cook endorse the<br />

Air Cabin Crew qualification and guarantee an<br />

interview for students who complete it, while<br />
