BTEC Extended Diploma (Level 3)<br />

Sport & Exercise Science<br />

This qualification provides industry-recognised<br />

occupational standards and is designed as a<br />

work-related qualification, focussed on developing<br />

your practical skills and underpinning Sport<br />

knowledge. Alongside your Diploma, you will be<br />

able to take the Community Sports Leadership<br />

Award and a First Aid qualification in your first<br />

year. During the second year, you can complete<br />

the Higher Sports Leadership Award and you<br />

will be encouraged to obtain at least one national<br />

governing body award in a specific sport.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You need at least six GCSEs at grade C or above. These must<br />

include English Language, Science and Maths. You also need<br />

to demonstrate a keen interest in studying and show a proven<br />

commitment to participating in sport.<br />

Course Expenses<br />

Sports kit – approximately £105. Course textbook – £25.<br />

Community Sports Leadership Award – £26.25. Higher Sports<br />

Leadership Award – £37.75. National Governing Body Awards<br />

are charged separately.<br />

This is a nationally recognised Sports & Recreation<br />

Apprenticeship, specifically designed to give you<br />

the right combination of practical and theoretical<br />

knowledge and skills to develop within the<br />

industry. This Apprenticeship is aimed at students<br />

working in Operational Services and aims to<br />

provide you with greater career opportunities in<br />

this area. The programme encompasses an NVQ<br />

(Level 2) Sport Operation & Operators, BTEC<br />

Award (Level 2) in Employment Awareness in<br />

Active Leisure and a BTEC First Diploma (Level 2)<br />

in Sport.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

You need a range of GCSEs at grade C to F. You should also be<br />

working in an appropriate job role by the start of your course.<br />

Course Expenses<br />

Optional sports kit – approximately £105.<br />

Career Prospects/Progression<br />

Following successful completion of this Apprenticeship, you can<br />

either continue your training with a relevant Level 3 qualification<br />

or apply for employment in roles such as leisure centre<br />

management, leisure centre assistant or fitness centre assistant.<br />

Work Experience<br />

You will complete a two week placement related to your area<br />

of interest.<br />

Trips/Residentials<br />

Opportunities include visits to Wimbledon, Twickenham and<br />

<strong>Yeovil</strong> Town Football Club, as well as a ski trip and a sports<br />

careers convention.<br />

Career Prospects/Progression<br />

If you successfully complete this course, you can progress to<br />

a higher qualification. For example, you could study for an<br />

Honours degree in subjects such as Sports Coaching, Sports<br />

Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Sports Therapy, Sports Science,<br />

Leisure Management, Physiotherapy or Sports Development.<br />

You may also be able to access a Physical Education teaching<br />

degree following this course.<br />
