BTEC Diploma/Extended Diploma<br />

(Level 3) Uniformed Public<br />

Services<br />

During this course, you will learn a range of<br />

knowledge and skills relevant for a career in the<br />

Uniformed Public Services. Topics covered include<br />

Citizenship & Diversity, Leadership & Teamwork<br />

and Government & Policy. You will have the<br />

opportunity to improve your fitness level through<br />

additional sport and activities, such as the Duke<br />

of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and gain additional<br />

qualifications, such as the NCFE Certificate in<br />

Outdoor Development, the Community Sports<br />

Leadership Award and the NCFE Award in<br />

Exercise, Health & Nutrition. This will provide<br />

you with an opportunity to nurture personal skills<br />

and take part in community engagement that is<br />

valued by public sector employers.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

You need at least five GCSEs at grade C or above, including<br />

English.<br />

Course Expenses<br />

Kit including a polo shirt and fleece – approximately £105.<br />

You will need to buy smart tracksuit or drill cotton trousers<br />

innavy blue to complete your uniform. Textbook – £20.<br />

Trips and residentials – approximately £100 per year.<br />

Community Sports Leadership Award – £26.<br />

Trips/Residentials<br />

You will take part in trips to relevant sites such as fire and police<br />

stations. Other destinations include Chepstow Army base,<br />

Cribbs Cross, Ham Hill, Avonmouth Docks, <strong>Yeovil</strong>ton and<br />

Aldershot. As well as meeting personnel from the Army,<br />

Royal Navy and Coldstream Guards, these visits give you the<br />

opportunity to develop skills as varied as map reading, raft<br />

building and rope work.<br />

Career Prospects/Progression<br />

If you successfully complete this qualification, you can apply for<br />

a wide range of public sector occupations, including posts in<br />

the Armed Forces, Emergency Services, Coastguard and Prison<br />

Service. For some professions, for example Paramedic, you may<br />

need to complete further courses and qualifications. Alternatively,<br />

you can apply for relevant Higher Education courses, such as the<br />

HND in Public Services available at the University Centre <strong>Yeovil</strong><br />

(UCY).<br />
