MOONFOLK.
did as she was bid, and in a few moments returned to
the kitchen.
" "Well, who was it ? " demanded her godmother.
"
A gentleman who asked to see the ladies : so I took
him up to my sisters' drawing-room," replied Cinderella
sadly.
" And why didn't you stay and see what he wanted
of you "
?
"
He didn't want anything
ot .
me, godmother he
;
asked for the young ladies."
" Come, child, you are not entirely spoiled, and don't
think yourself everybody quite yet," said the godmother,
smiling grimly.
" Come along with me to the drawingroom,
and if those impertinent people in the corner wish
to come too, they may."
"
Oh ho, fairy godmother, you have found us out,
have you ? " laughed the Chimney-Elf.
" Of course we're
coming too, gossip :
that's just what we're here for."
So the fairy godmother, leading Cinderella,
and followed
by Rhoda and the Chimney-Elf, went up into the
grand drawing-room, where Finetta, the second sister, was
already trying on the glass slipper, and doing her very
best to squeeze her great toes into it,
but without success.
Suzette, the elder sister, sat on the sofa, looking
very pale, and holding her foot in her hand. She had
hurt it so dreadfully in her frantic efforts to get the
slipper over her great heel that she could hardly keep
from fainting.
