The courier looked extremely puzzled.
"Pardon me, madam," said he, bowing very low

The prince said ! retorted the fairy godmother.
" What do you suppose I care what the prince said ? Go
home, young man, and do your errand just as it was
given you."
So the courier, looking very doubtful and awkward,
was forced to go as he had come, and Cinderella very
slowly and unwillingly put her glass slipper into her
pocket, and went down to the kitchen again, followed by
Suzette and Finetta, who were both sobbing out :
" Oh, 'Rella, don't you forget us when you are married
to the prince, will you ? Let us come and help do the
work, that's a dear ;
and then we'll dress you all up in
our best clothes, and you'll be ready for the prince whenever
he comes. Oh, 'Rella, we always did love you
dearly, and we ought to have been better sisters to you
we feel it now."
" There, stop that, and go to work, if you really
mean what you say," interrupted
the fairy godmother.
" Suzette, go and draw water from the well, fill the teakettle
and set it on ;
then bring coals from the cellar,
make up the fire,
and rake out the cinders. Finetta, get
the tub and wash those dirty dishes; and Cinderella,
sweep the kitchen, and put it in the nicest order directly."
