192 And now the course was cleared, the barriers thrown down, and the heralds announced that the lists were open to any ^knights who, having exchanged challenges and given their names to the heralds, might choose to ride against each other with sharp spears and swords, the combat to be decided by the first blood drawn, or by either knight yielding himself vanquished. The first victor would receive as prize a silver lance-head bestowed upon him by the Queen of Love and Beauty ; the second would have a sword-hilt ; the third a pair of spurs ; and the fourth a silken scarf. Each victor should have the privilege of challenging any knight who had not yet ridden ; but those once vanquished were not permit ted to en>ter the lists again that afternoon, and the prizes were not to be awarded until the jousts were ended for the day. These terms announced, the trumpets sounded a fanciful flourish, and in at each end of the lists rode six knights; the one party, called the challenged, remained stationary just inside the barriers, while the other, called the challengers, rode rapidly forward, and each lightly touched with his spear-point the shield of him whom he wished to oppose. These ranged themselves opposite to their challengers, who, wheeling their horses, returned to their own end of the lists, wheeled again, and at the sound of the trumpets both bands galloped forward, meeting midway with a tremendous shock.
