THE TOURNAMENT.<br />

IE day following that of Rhoda's arrival at Came-<br />

Ict was appointed for a grand tournament or joust,<br />

when all the knights of Arthur's court, and as many<br />

besides as chose to attend, were to tilt with blunted lances<br />

and edgeless swords, fighting not for life, but glory and<br />

ladies' smiles.<br />

The lists were set in a beautiful green meadow beside<br />

the river Usk, and at an early hour the whole court set<br />

forth, the knights riding their war-chargers and the<br />

ladies their palfreys or jennets, all dressed in their best<br />

array, and wearing their gayest faces.<br />

Rhoda, mounted upon a pretty pony, rode between<br />
