Director of Logistical Services<br />
Service Description:<br />
Logistical Services comprises Catering Services; Commercial Services; Events and Income<br />
Development Unit; the <strong>MPS</strong> Historical Collection; Personnel and Development Unit (RPDU);<br />
Transport Services; and the Vehicle Recovery and Examination Service.<br />
Key Activities:<br />
Catering Services<br />
• 10.5 million meals are supplied annually to staff on a repayment basis at 100+ permanent units<br />
around London.<br />
• Over 800,000 meals (without charge but at predetermined levels of cost) are provided annually<br />
at temporary locations in direct support of policing at over 850 public order events and<br />
operational emergencies.<br />
Commercial Services<br />
Central Property Services<br />
• The collection, long term storage and disposal of crime related property and evidential interview<br />
tapes; the disposal of bulky property found in the streets; and the kennelling of seized<br />
dangerous dogs.<br />
Linguistic and Forensic Medical Services<br />
• Responsible for interpreter, translator, and forensic medical examiner services – 310<br />
independent accredited linguists and 140 independent medical practitioners are listed with the<br />
<strong>MPS</strong>.<br />
Travel Services<br />
• Arranges UK air travel and foreign travel and accommodation arrangements for police officers<br />
and police staff on operational duties at minimum cost.<br />
Uniform Services<br />
• Specifies, develops, and purchases uniforms, protective clothing and associated equipment.<br />
Events and Income Development Unit<br />
• Develops income development initiatives with <strong>MPS</strong> business groups; exploits commercial<br />
intellectual property opportunities, and provides an events management service.<br />
• Develops and implements policies and processes to secure increased sponsorship; and records<br />
all income data across <strong>MPS</strong> business groups.<br />
• Oversees the management of the Historical Collection.<br />
Resources Human Resources Services<br />
• Provides professional personnel advice, support and management information to line managers<br />
within the Resources Directorate.<br />
• Manages a devolved Resources Directorate recruitment unit.<br />
• Runs induction courses for new staff and developmental courses for existing staff within the<br />
Directorate.<br />
• Administers an Interactive Learning Suite.<br />
Transport Services<br />
• The provision of a safe and reliable fleet comprising 5,003 <strong>MPS</strong> owned cars (of which 93 are<br />
leased Hybrid vehicles), vans and motorcycles, medium and large goods vehicles, and 28 boats<br />
- this involves their acquisition, equipping for service, repair, maintenance and end of life<br />
disposal; and approximately 1,389 hire vehicles daily through a centrally managed contract.<br />
• The provision of drivers and vehicles around the clock in response to both pre-planned and<br />
spontaneous events.<br />
• The operation of a centralised distribution service of goods and products to around 200 locations,<br />
and the daily collection, sorting and delivery of approximately 4½ tonnes of internal mail and<br />
forensic evidence to and from 350 <strong>MPS</strong> locations.<br />
• The contract management of the <strong>MPS</strong> agency fuel provision, and the management and<br />
maintenance of <strong>MPS</strong> bulk fuel sites.<br />
Vehicle Recovery and Examination Service:<br />
• Police authorised recovery, examination (forensic and mechanical), and storage of stolen<br />
vehicles, those involved in crime, illegally parked vehicles, and those involved in fatal collisions.<br />
