Listen<strong>in</strong>g: You pay attention <strong>to</strong> what is be<strong>in</strong>g said, show <strong>in</strong>terest by nodd<strong>in</strong>g your<br />
head <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g eye contact. Allow the speaker <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish without <strong>in</strong>terrupt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(unless they are dom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g the group <strong>and</strong> haven’t allowed others <strong>to</strong> speak).<br />
Paraphras<strong>in</strong>g: You repeat what the person said us<strong>in</strong>g your own words (i.e. <strong>in</strong>terpret<br />
or reword). This is <strong>to</strong> ensure you underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> are not mak<strong>in</strong>g assumptions.<br />
Summaris<strong>in</strong>g: You sum up by go<strong>in</strong>g over the ma<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts. You help participants <strong>to</strong><br />
ga<strong>in</strong> a better underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the subject.<br />
Creativity: You must always have a plan B. Be imag<strong>in</strong>ative <strong>and</strong> stimulated. Make<br />
your sessions fun yet educational by ensur<strong>in</strong>g that the group does not miss the<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts. You know when <strong>and</strong> how <strong>to</strong> use humour (without be<strong>in</strong>g offensive),<br />
ice-breakers <strong>and</strong> energisers. Identify different ways of achiev<strong>in</strong>g the objectives<br />
without compromis<strong>in</strong>g the quality of the session.<br />
<strong>Awareness</strong>: You pay attention <strong>to</strong> what is not be<strong>in</strong>g said <strong>in</strong> the group, people’s<br />
unspoken needs <strong>and</strong> watch out for group dynamics that need attention. You are<br />
able <strong>to</strong> “read” the energy <strong>and</strong> level of the group <strong>and</strong> adjust your programme<br />
accord<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />
