Equality Authority to coincide with this event. The information campaign
had three main elements which were:
A nationwide billboard advertising campaign.
A radio advertising campaign, both local and national.
Publication of a guide to the Equal Status Act.
The formal launch to acknowledge the coming into operation of the new
legislation was organised by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law
Reform.The Equality Authority's information and advertising initiatives
were timed to coincide with the launch. Distribution of the guide to the
Act began on 25th October and within a three week period a total of
three thousand copies of the guide had been distributed to the social
partners, to the community and voluntary sector and to individual
members of the public. Copies continue to be distributed on an ongoing
basis.
3. North-South Conference
The Equality Authority, in co-operation with the Department of Foreign
Affairs, the I.C.T.U., the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, the
Northern Ireland Office, the Human Rights Commission in both
jurisdictions on the island and the Northern Ireland Council of Ethnic
Minorities, hosted a Conference on Human Rights on the Island of
Ireland in Dublin Castle in December.The Equality Authority acted as coordinator
for the Conference to which human rights activists, academics,
trade unionists and representatives of Government Departments from
both North and South attended.The keynote speaker at the conference
was Professor Sir Nigel Rodley (see page 63).
