6.40 Care should be taken to avoid undue pressure on local residents’ parking,<br />

as it is clear that the spending power of local people makes an important<br />

contribution to trade. Indeed, the town centre benefits significantly from the<br />

close inter-relationship between town centre uses and dwellings. If anything,<br />

further opportunities for town centre living, especially if it attracted higher<br />

spending power, would directly benefit the town centre.<br />

6.41 Supporting sustainable travel may also play a greater part, especially in<br />

relation to developing attractive pedestrian and cycle routes that have the<br />

town centre as the point of destination.<br />

6.42 More attractive connections to the seafront and Egerton Park can also<br />

stimulate more linked trips, especially in relation to more “leisure-oriented”<br />

trips.<br />

Conclusion<br />

6.43 Therefore, a policy should embrace the following elements:<br />

Promotion of a co-ordinated approach to the town centre<br />

Highlight its multi-functional use for services, employment and leisure,<br />

and living, as well as shopping<br />

Give specific attention to improving accessibility by all modes, links to<br />

the seafront, and integration of such considerations with ensuring a<br />

more attractive shopping environment and compatibility with its<br />

Conservation Area status<br />

Application of the recommendations in the Shopping Assessment, and<br />

identification of the opportunity to accommodate some of these on the<br />

edge of the centre<br />

Also give encouragement to additional hotel accommodation, leisure,<br />

office and high quality residential developments within walking<br />

distance of the centre<br />
