Bevor
die Künstlerin aber ihre erste Stromquelle und
die ersten Brenner von ABICOR BINZEL bei
dem Schweißfachhändler und
BINZEL BEST PARTNER
and Director Marketing International Jan Hasselbaum.
Since that day, the sculptor has been frantically working
on the sculpture – of which the final version is almost two
metres tall – as the delivery to KHD Managing Director
Mr Ronald Schulz is firmly set. However, before we can
have a look at the current state of the artwork, only
one week before loading and transport to Dresden,
Angelika Summa invites us to have coffee and cake on
her studio terrace.
Welded Spheres, Cones and Pyramids.
The shapes that Angelika Summa arranges time after
time are spheres, cones, cubes and pyramids, which can
be described as the principal motifs of her art. “I started
with wire windings, from which I formed spheres. When
I wanted to move forward into other dimensions, I needed
greater resilience and stability. I wanted to continue
working with metal, the logical result was to weld,” she
describes the beginning of her work as a welding artist.
The sculptures of Angelika Summa can weigh up to a
ton. Much of the artist’s welding knowledge in the area
of MIG/MAG has come from learning by doing with
colleagues who have also adopted the artistic direction
of “metal sculpting”. “I was immediately fascinated and
somehow turned on by the technique of welding; you
feel the force and something new is created,” the sculptor
says and her eyes light up. To learn TIG welding,
however, she took a course and did a great deal of
practice. Speaking about herself, the pure artist says that
she is no technology freak and that she has developed
her welding abilities sufficiently to get to grips with the
power source and the torch. Yet, before the artist bought
her first power source and her first ABICOR BINZEL
torches from specialist welding dealer and BINZEL BEST
PARTNER Slatina Schweißtechnik in Würzburg, she
was able to use a studio in
Bremerhaven as “Artist in
Residence” for 6 weeks
through a scholarship
and had access to a
