culture as well as the impressive nature of the Harz. 

Because the towns are close together, it is easy to explore them 

whether on foot, i.e. Harzer-Hexen-Stieg, by mountain bike 

through the Volksbank Arena Harz, by motorbike or car. 

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage "Upper Harz Water Management" 

in the Upper Harz. A great place to explore unique ponds,

altenau is a town of herbs and spices as well as an excellent starting point 

for hikes. From Torfhaus you can take the 8 km Goetheweg (Goethe trail) 

to the Brocken, a walking trail which is well signposted and maintained. 

buntenbock is a district of Clausthal-Zellerfeld, which is especially popular 

with guests during the summer months, who are enchanted by the 

scenery, the lakes and mountain meadows that surround the area. 

Clausthal-zellerfeld is a university town in the centre of the Upper 

Harz with a rich cultural heritage of mining. You can also visit the largest 

wooden church in Germany the Marktkirche zum Heiligen Geist (Holy Spirit 

Parish Church). 

Sankt andreasberg is the highest mountain town in the Harz and is 

situated next to the National Park and close to the Brocken. This spa and 

winter sport resort offers wonderful nature, comfortable climate and various 

sports activities for your holiday dreams. 

Schulenberg is situated away from through traffic, with a breathtaking panoramic 

view over the Oker reservoir. Active holidays are a top priority here!

Altenau – where the palate meets the herbs. With an interesting 

program of organised events the former mining town was awarded 

a prize in a state wide competition. Since then the “Würzel” 

(a figure planted with herbs) has become a popular item in Altenau. 

Europe's largest herbal park with its gallery and pagoda of 

spices and its private gardens led by the “Altenau herbal path”, 

combined with the mountain meadows, show the importance of 

herbs and spices for this mountain town. 

The climatic health resort is a convenient starting point for 

walks of different levels, such as on the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg. 

From the Torfhaus situated in the Harz National Park, there is the 

Goetheweg, an 8 km walk through unspoilt nature to the Brocken 

Summit. 

Mountain bike friends ascend in the middle of Altenau as part 

of the 1,800 km marked routes of the Volksbank-arena Harz. 

Treat and pamper yourself at the Kristall-Saunatherme “Heißer 

brocken” with their salt baths, indoor and outdoor saunas and 

spas for relaxation. 

Further leisure facilities include Altenau DSV Nordic Walking

The Harzer MTb Cup with its Marathon, Cross- 

Country Cup, Student and Youth Cup is held annually

Association and attracts many fans and sports 

enthusiasts in May to Altenau.

At 812 meters the Torfhaus is a real Harzer highlight. From the Torfhaus Goethe started 

his climb to the summit of the Brocken. Today, not only hikers, bikers and skiers, but also 

nature lovers meet here. Since 2009, you can visit the national park visitor centre and its 

attractive multi-media exhibition for children and enjoy the wide panoramic glass wall 

offering a magnificent view towards the Brocken.

The health resort Buntenbock is a district of Clausthal-Zellerfeld, 

which offers its guests an idyllic location for an original and relaxing 

holiday. Allow your body, mind and soul, to breathe again as 

you wander through the mountain meadows and forests. 

Enjoy the walks and hikes during all seasons around the numerous 

ponds of the UNESCO World Heritage “Upper Harz Water 

Management“, the famous “Harzer-Hexen-Stieg” and the 

new “Harzer Försterstieg” (Ranger walk). All offer you beautiful 

landscape adventure. 

The keeping of domestic animals particularly horses and goats 

were an important part and tradition for the former village and 

the workmen in the mining industry. Today you can still see an 

impressive flock of goats on your walk to the observation tower 

“Kuckholzklippe” (direction Lerbach). 

For many years the farmers celebrate the livestock and meadow 

festival by taking their traditional Harz Red Cattle to the Buntenbock 

Kurpark. 

Every two weeks from April to September the village market is 

held in the Kurpark, where people offer arts and crafts and home 

produced products and specialities.

Clausthal-zellerfeld 

The mountain and university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld is 

a state-approved health and spa resort, which is in the centre of 

the Upper Harz Mountains. The countryside offers in every season 

many different activities, such as hiking, Nordic walking, horse riding, 

cycling, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, tobogganing and 

biathlon. 

This culturally diverse university city offers something for everybody. 

The main shopping street, Adolph-Roemer-Strasse, extends 

from the Church of the Holy Spirit, the largest wooden church 

in Germany, to the centrally located square, Kronenplatz. 

The oldest mining museum in Germany “Oberharzer Bergwerksmuseum”, 

(Upper Harz Mining Museum) in the district of Zellerfeld, 

displays major technical and cultural history of the region. 

In the immediate vicinity are town houses like the “Dietzelhaus” 

and the pharmacy, known as “grotesque pharmacy”, which are 

elaborately decorated houses with carved faces as well as the St. 

Salvatori Church, for which “Werner Tübke” designed the altar. 

Bornhardtstrasse transforms every Thursday in summer between 

the Upper Harz mining museum and the arts and crafts workshop 

into the lively Upper Harz farmers market.

Technical University of Clausthal-zellerfeld 

robert-Koch-Haus 

Robert Koch, the founder of bacteriology, was born 1843 

in Clausthal-Zellerfeld as the son of a mining family. 

He studied medicine at the University of Goettingen 

and graduated in 1866. Most of his youth he spent in 

Clausthal-Zellerfeld living at Kronenplatz 12, the lovely 

pink-painted house typical of the Harz. In front of the 

house there is a bust of the famous physician, who won 

the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1905. Today he is remembered 

by various buildings, such as his birth house at 

Osteroeder Strasse, the hospital, a grammar school as 

well as a street named after him. You can follow in his 

footsteps by using the flyer offered by the tourist information.

Sankt andreasberg 

Sankt Andreasberg is the highest mountain town in the Harz and 

is situated next to the National Park and close to the Brocken. It is 

surrounded by beautiful mountain meadows. 

The climate is great! 200 km hiking trails through mountains, 

valleys and the Harz National Park, the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg hiking 

trail, adventure in the sky rope garden, Nordic walking, mountain 

biking, summer toboggan, archery, tennis, swimming, the 

National Park House and innovative holiday offers provide fun,

The cultural treasures of this former silver ore-mining industry, bears 

witness to the historic mining dominance of this romantic mountain 

town. The silver ore mine Samson with its original machine “Gaipel” 

and the two water wheels are part of the Upper Harz Water Management 

and were added in 2010 as a UNESCO World Heritage 

Site. The complex includes the mine “Catharina Neufang”, where 

you can admire the mining industry from 1500 and the world's only 

Harzer canaries museum, a unique museum where they show you 

the history of breeding and raising canaries starting from 1485 in a 

lovingly created exhibition. Today they still breed and raise canaries. 

Near Sankt Andreasberg is another UNESCO World Heritage site to 

be visited – the Oker reservoir with its water ways “Rehberger Graben” 

and the restaurant “Rehberger Grabenhaus”, here you will 

find a small exhibition on the “Upper Harz Water Management”. 

In the mine “Grube Roter Bär” (red bear) you can experience the 

historic mining first hand. 

Top conditions for winter sports 

As one of the highest ski areas in the Harz mountains Sankt Andreasberg 

can guarantee snow almost every year. Once the snow arrives you will 

find the perfect winter sport conditions on the Matthias-Schmidt-berg 

and the Sonnenberg. You can do major winter sports such as alpine 

skiing and snowboarding with the necessary lifts. In and around Sankt 

Andreasberg is a network of cross country skiing through beautiful winter 

forest. The trails amount to more than several hundred kilometres.

Schulenberg 

The picturesque health resort Schulenberg is situated next to 

the Oker reservoir. This town was literally built out of the floods. 

In 1954 the valley of the lower and middle Schulenberg (school 

mountain) was flooded to create the dam and the Oker reservoir. 

The town was moved to the top of the Schulenberg and Schulenberg 

was reborn. Since then a mysterious legend says that occasionally 

you can see the top of the church tower and hear its bells 

ringing. If you want to know what is really left from the old town, 

you can join the diving team and discover what is hidden in the 

depths. 

In the summer the Oker reservoir is an attractive place for walkers, 

skaters and particularly water sports enthusiastics, who can 

sail, windsurf, swim or do canoe tours. In addition you can enjoy 

the Oker reservoir on boat tours conducted by Okersee-Schifffahrt 

all year round. 

Schulenberg offers many other activities if you are a landlubber. 

You are invited to play tennis, practice golf and do rock climbing 

on the varied landscape as well as hiking and mountain biking. 

From the “bike-alpinum Schulenberg”, where a lift conveniently 

takes you and your bike up the 645 meter Wiesenberg you 

can enjoy the downhill in four different descents – Downhill, Freeride,

Wildemann 

Wildemann is one of the former seven Upper Harz mountain 

towns that owe their existence to the mining industry. You can 

get a vivid impression of the working conditions underground in 

the “19-lachter-Stollen”, an authentic witness to the historic 

mining industry, which is one of the oldest accessible hill stations 

of the Upper Harz (Lachter is a unit of measurement used in the 

old mines and equals 1 Lachter = 1.92 m). The name of the town 

is taken from the “wild man” who once lived there, and to which 

a bronze statue in the centre of town is dedicated. 

The wild and romantic mountain town is nestled between two 

valleys, the “innerste” and “Spiegel” valley. In this stunning 

natural landscape you can enjoy peace and quiet. All around 

Wildemann you will find beautiful hiking trails and hidden 

valleys, clear streams flow through idyllic woods into lakes and 

invite you to rest and enjoy nature at its best. 

Water treading stations allow you to maintain your health and 

make use of the old treatment methods. All year you are offered 

a variety of activities such as Nordic walking, mountain biking 

(with links to the Volksbank Arena Harz), iron curling, inline

Mountain biking in the Harz will make the heart of any mountain 

biker beat faster in the truest sense of the word. This is an experience 

of nature and physical strength combined. The absolute 

highlight for mountain bikers is the Volksbank arena Harz with 

its own 62 marked routes and about 1,800 km of adventurous 

trails. Here you will find fantastic views, long up hill climbs and fast 

descents as well as fascinating variety of landscapes.

Hiking in the Harz 

In the Harz everyone gets an appetite for hiking. There are extensive 

networks of trails with interesting viewpoints well sign posted. 

Cosy cottages and “Bauden” (Harz restaurants huts) through 

beautiful countryside and nature. Each region offers beautiful 

hiking trails. One of the best known hiking trails in Germany is 

the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg (witches way), which passes through 

Altenau, Buntenbock, Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Sankt Andreasberg 

enabling you great starting points. 

The “Harzer Försterstieg” (Harz forester trail) is a new 60 

km long trail through the West Harz. It connects the historic imperial 

city of Goslar with the mountain village Riefensbeek-Kamschlacken. 

This trek leads past three reservoirs, the Granetal reservoir, 

Innerste reservoir and Söse reservoir. 

Guided hikes are offered all year in the Upper Harz with expert 

guides on various topics, who can give informative and extensive 

knowledge of one of Germany´s most extensive hiking area. 

Various hiking and cycling maps are available in the tourist information 

office. In addition, we have prepared for you great 

hiking tour suggestions and tips. Get your own hiking log

Oxfam Trailwalker Harz 

The Oxfam Trailwalker is a great team event 

for trail walking, running and trekking.

JAnuAry 

The Upper Harz traditionally celebrates 

the winter in January. Anyone who has 

spent their Christmas holidays here on 

top of the Harz will remember enjoying 

the snow after the big New Year's Eve 

parties and winter markets in Altenau or 

Sankt Andreasberg. 

With good winter conditions in the middle 

of the month people are attracted to the 

sledging in Clausthal-Zellerfeld and the 

ski and toboggan Festival on the 29 th in 

Altenau. 

At the end of January is the popular winter 

festival in Sankt Andreasberg with the 

legendary winter side car meeting for hardcore 

motorcycle enthusiasts from all over 

Europe. 

FEBruAry 

A special highlight of the winter sports 

season, not least because of the huge 

success of the Upper Harz biathlon athletes, 

Daniel Boehm and Arnd Peiffer, is 

the German biathlon student cup from 

the 5 th –6 th February. Also in February 

is the International Sledge dog race in 

Clausthal-Zellerfeld. 

For all active guests, the Bruchberg 

cross-country skiing event is ideal for 

everyone. Held in the ski stadium Tischlertal 

/ Altenau on 27 th February. Simply 

register and ski along. 

MArCH 

If the winter has not disappeared by March 

than delight in a spring winter sports 

break in the Harz. Only two hours away by 

car or train from Hamburg, you can easily 

be at the best ski areas. Now is the time 

for enjoyment while the slopes are less 

busy. In addition, come and celebrate the 

winter romance at the Winter Ball in Sankt 

Andreasberg on the 5 th March. 

APril 

Probably the most mystical and legendary 

month in the Harz, because it ends 

with the big Walpurgis on 30th April. It 

all starts in the afternoon with the celebrations 

and parties for the children 

in the Kurparks, in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, 

Altenau, Sankt Andreasberg and Wildemann. 

In the evening it becomes really 

colourful, as people arrive dressed as 

witches and devils. The Walpurgis celebrations 

offer different programs depending 

on the location. While Altenau 

has dance and music in the foreground, 

one of the highlights of Sankt Andreasberg 

is definitely the theatre 

performance based on Goethe's 

“Faust”.

Witches Festival

MAy 

Starting from the 1 st May until the 30 th 

October on Thursdays is the popular Upper 

Harz farmers market held at Bornhardtstrasse 

in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Here you 

can find many local specialties and arts 

and crafts. 

On the 15 th May the international museum 

day the Upper Harz Mining Museum 

“Bergwerksmuseum” opens its doors 

with many special events and special offers. 

The Mountain Farm Festival is celebrated 

in mid-May for the second time in 

Sankt Andreasberg. 

The MTB mountain bike cup is held annually 

in Altenau on 21 st –22 nd May. On 

the weekend before the event mountain 

bikers can also attend some training sessions 

conducted on the original MTB marathon 

course. 

JunE 

Since 2009 the Harzer Roller festival is an 

event not to be missed. The canary and 

the famous Harz cheese are an integral 

part of the events calendar in Sankt Andreasberg. 

On 4 th June 2011 is the third 

Harz Roller festival all around the canary 

museum. For active people the Nordic 

Walking Cross on the 5 th June in Altenau 

is not to be missed. While Clausthal-Zellerfeld 

offers more sport highlights such 

as the Lower Saxony Summer Biathlon 

Championships on the 17 th and 18 th June. 

Sankt Andreasberg celebrates on the 19 th 

June the Meadow Blossom Festival, a 

traditional, impressive and colourful festival 

held on the famous nature protected 

mountain meadows. 

The medieval festival “Johannisfest” on 

the 24 th June will be celebrated all over 

the Upper Harz. 

Watch the traditional Shepherd’s Meeting 

on Pentecost Sunday, where the 

shepherds drive their flock through town 

with a big show to mark the beginning 

of the grazing season. On Whit Monday 

bands meet on the “Polsterberg” (mountain 

between Altenau and Clausthal-Zellerfeld) 

and play traditional music. 

July 

In the middle of July join with other guests 

and locals at the "Festival of Spices" in 

Altenau, the home of the largest herb 

farm in Europe. While in Clausthal-Zellerfeld 

the traditional Schuetzenfest (shooting 

festival) is a great way to observe 

local traditions. 

In Sankt Andreasberg from the 15 th –24 th 

July is the open arts and crafts market 

held in the barn by the town hall. 

AuguST 

Tradition continues in to late summer 

with the yodel contest in the Kurpark in 

Clausthal-Zellerfeld on the 7 th August. For 

many years the farmers celebrate the livestock 

and meadow festival by taking their 

traditional Harz Red Cattle to the Buntenbock 

Kurpark – 7 th August. The light 

festival is on the 6 th August in the lido 

“Okerteich” in Altenau. Also in Altenau 

will present the annual herb Olympics. 

In Sankt Andreasberg the month starts 

with the hunting festival. The bike day in 

Wildemann and Clausthal-Zellerfeld as 

well as the Harz Mountain Sports Show 

and the great hunting festival in Buntenbock 

will take place in late August. 

SEPTEMBEr 

Although September starts with the 

Mountain Festival on 3 rd September 

2011 in Sankt Andreasberg, the month 

is about “Hubertus”, the patron saint of 

hunters. Join the 15 th “Hubertus week” 

in Altenau from 10 th to 18 th . The topic 

is all about the deer, stags and nature 

of the Harz National Park. 

Experience from 23 rd to 25 th in Sankt Andreasberg 

the 11 th Harzer Hirschrufmeisterschaften 

(Stag call championships). 

In Sankt Andreasberg autumn makes an 

entrance with the annual art exhibition 

“Nature-Mankind“ arts and crafts market 

held in the town hall barn. 

Clausthal-Zellerfeld draws nature lovers 

on 24 th and 25 th September to a great 

mineral and fossil exchange. 

OCTOBEr 

By now the autumn displays a true explosion 

of colours in the woods and 

inspires not only artists but also many 

holiday makers to creativity and intellectual 

exchange. Join the 35 th German- 

Danish walking day in Wildemann on the 

10 th October. 

nOvEMBEr 

Here you can get that Christmas feeling 

even earlier as often the winter has al- 

ready settled. The landscape is cloaked in 

a vast white blanket, beautiful scenes of 

magical bright blue to gentle sparkling 

colours in the evening. The first Christmas 

feelings awaken in the evenings with the 

glistening and the lights. Now is the time 

for relaxation, savouring the peace and 

quiet before the big Christmas rush. Visit

Unesco World Heritage 

Upper Harz Water 

Management 

The Upper Harz Water Management is a worldwide unique water management 

system. It was added in 2010 to the list of natural and cultural heritage 

by the UNESCO World Heritage. 

The UNESCO World Heritage „Upper Harz Water Management“ consists 

of 107 historic ponds and 310 kilometres of ditches and 31 kilometres of 

streams. More than 800 years ago the Cistercian monks began in the Harz 

to develop the numerous ponds, ditches and streams which were later to 

provide water power for the mining industry in the region. 

Through an elaborate network of storage ponds and streams they were able 

to pump water wheels for the promotion and driving skills of the Harz silver 

ore mines. Without the intensive use of water energy, the Harz would probably 

not have developed into one of the most important mining regions. 

Today the plants of the Upper Harz Water conservation are partly used for 

drinking water. 

While hiking in the Harz you can get to know the structures and ponds, and 

the UNESCO World Heritage site first hand. 

The Tourist Information Upper Harz offers you special world heritage walks 

and guided tours on the trails of the Upper Harz Water Management.

Rammelsberg mines with the Upper Harz Water Management.
