Awards<br />

Each year, students and course instructors<br />

are able to recognize outstanding <strong>graduate</strong><br />

student TA’s by nominating them for a Graduate<br />

Student Teaching Award. Recipients are selected<br />

by committee, based on the results <strong>of</strong> standard<br />

evaluations and written comments provided by<br />

Looking for a unique scholarly experience?<br />

Hoping to be involved with university research<br />

before <strong>graduate</strong> school? Our Scholar’s Electives<br />

program is designed for high-achieving, selfdirected<br />

students interested in pursuing an<br />

interdisciplinary academic experience.<br />

Being a Scholar’s electives student gives you<br />

the ability to create a module theme such as<br />

multiculturalism or bioethics. Prospective<br />

students must submit a supplementary<br />

application form to the Scholar’s Elective<br />

program by March 1, 2011. Please note that<br />

this option is not available to current students.<br />

Upper year students who wish to discuss this<br />

program should contact the program <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

directly. This program is run through The<br />

Student Success Centre.<br />

High achieving students entering first<br />

year can participate in <strong>Western</strong>’s “honors<br />

society” known as <strong>Western</strong> Scholars, <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

by The Student Success Centre. As a <strong>Western</strong><br />

Scholar, you can participate in service<br />

learning initiatives throughout the <strong>University</strong><br />

and London community, special events and<br />

extra–curricular activities throughout the<br />

year. You will have excellent opportunities to<br />

connect with Associate Deans, pr<strong>of</strong>essors and<br />

social and cultural leaders by being part <strong>of</strong> this<br />

society. To be eligible, you must be entering<br />

<strong>Western</strong> as a full-time student with a final high<br />

school admission average <strong>of</strong> at least 90 per cent.<br />

To retain the <strong>Western</strong> Scholars designation, you<br />

must achieve a sessional average at <strong>Western</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

at least 80 per cent with no mark less than 65<br />

per cent with a full course load. This program is<br />

open to students in all under<strong>graduate</strong> programs.<br />

Graduating Awards and<br />

Medals<br />

Gold medals are awarded to the top<br />

graduating students at Spring Convocation by<br />

the Dean’s Office in each Faculty. A gold medal<br />

is awarded to the top student in each Honors<br />

Specialization module and in each Major <strong>of</strong> an<br />

Honors Double Major. In addition, one gold<br />

medal is given to the top student in a 3 year<br />

Bachelor degree and a 4 Year Bachelor degree<br />

for a Specialization and a Major module.<br />
