Privacy Policy
Western’s Approach to Information and
Protection of Privacy
With the extension of the Freedom of
Information and Protection of Privacy Act
(FIPPA) to Ontario universities in June 2006,
records under Western’s custody or control are
now subject to this provincial legislation. The
two key principles that underlie the Act —
public access to information and protection of
personal privacy — are principles that Western
had taken seriously for many years prior to the
application of FIPPA.
In 1996 the Board of Governors approved
The University of Western Ontario Guidelines
on Access to Information and Protection
of Privacy. The principles upon which the
Guidelines are based include the following: as
a general rule, with the exception of personal
information, information contained in University
records should be available to members of the
University community and to members of the
public more generally; exemptions from the
general principle favouring access should be as
limited and specific as possible; and collection,
retention, use, and disclosure of personal
information contained in University records
should be regulated in a manner that will protect
the privacy of individuals who are the subject of
such information.
Currently, Western endeavours to provide
both the University community and the public
with broad access to its records. It continues its
efforts to protect the personal information of
all individuals who come into contact with the
University, be they students, alumni, faculty,
staff, or members of the general public. The
goal has been to ensure that all information is
dealt with appropriately, whether in accordance
with University policies or legislation. The
latter includes, for example, requirements
laid out in the Freedom of Information and
Protection of Privacy Act and in the federal
Personal Information Protection and Electronic
Documents Act (PIPEDA), to the extent that the
latter Act is applicable to the University.
Western has established an Information
and Privacy Office located in the University
Secretariat and appointed an Information and
Privacy Coordinator. This Office is responsible
for the day-to-day administration of FIPPA and
other related legislation. An Advisory Committee
has been formed to assist the Coordinator with
the task of implementation. Members of the
Committee are: Director of the Information and
Privacy Office; University Secretary; University
Archivist; University Legal Counsel; Director
of Internal Audit; Director of Administration,
Student Services; Legal Manager; Research
Development Services and Director; Information
Technology Services.
SERT: Student Emergency
Response Team, USC
Phone: 519-661-2111 (Ext. 84824)
General Inquiries: shs-ert@uwo.ca
First Aid Courses: sert-firstaid@uwo.ca
Room 28, UCC (Inside Student Health Services)
SERT is much more than a university club.
We are a team of unique individuals from every
faculty on campus. Though our goals and
backgrounds are diverse, we are all connected
by our desire to help other people. It is because
of this and the large amount of time that the
team spends together through training and
social events, that every new member quickly
becomes an integral part of our closely-knit
group. Becoming a member on SERT will also
expose you to many real emergency situations
that will get your adrenaline flowing and put
your leadership skills and your first aid training
to the test. These experiences will ingrain in you
the leadership skills and the confidence to excel
in all areas of life. Finally, you will be able to help
other people when they need you the most.
Time Commitment
Each SERT member is responsible to
volunteer for one on-call shift per week. These
shifts run during the day from 8:20am to
6:20pm and overnight from 6:20pm to 8:20am,
sleeping accommodations are provided for
overnight shifts. Every SERT member is also
required to attend monthly trainings which are
approximately 5 hours in duration. While
on-call a SERT member can do regular
daily activities (eg. homework, work out
at Campus Rec, watch a movie at Western
Film) and therefore will have time to
complete assignments and school work
while on-call.
The Application Process
SERT accepts applications to the team
in early September of each academic year.
There are six stages to the application process
as outlined below. In order to apply to SERT
you must have a minimum requirement of
Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR,
or its equivalent according to the Workers’
Compensation Board.
Applications are due early in September,
immediately after Orientation Week. Check out
the example dates below and look out for actual
deadlines being posted in July.
First Aid Training
SERT offers courses in standard
first aid with basic rescuer certification
and re-certification. Covering CPR and
contingencies for numerous emergency
situations, sign up for a course at www.sert.
