Dining out in Munich
The heart of Munich is the Marienplatz with the New
Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), built 1867 - 1909 in the
Flanders Gothic style. Its belltower houses the world-famous
Glockenspiel, which was created in 1908. The figures
of the carillon show different parts of Munich’s history. The
upper part depicts a joust which was
arranged for the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V. and Renata
of Lothringen. The lower part of the carillon shows one
of Munich’s traditional dances, the “Schäfflertanz”.
Next to the Marienplatz you can experience “Bayerische
Gemuetlichkeit” in one of the famous beer halls. You can
enjoy traditional music, tasty Bavarian dishes and, of course,
a “Maß of Beer” in one of the following restaurants:
Be sure to visit the Victuals Market. For those who appreciate
culinary seduction of the senses, this is the perfect
place to spend a few hours, taste new flavours,
and buy those rare and exotic herbs and spices that can‘t
be found anywhere else in the region. After a walk across
the market, take a snack at the “Schrannenhalle”, built
under King Maximilian according to a French model. The
hall burned down in 1932 but was rebuilt using the original
wrought-iron frames and is now a meeting place for old
and young.
You can enjoy the fabulous “Kalbshaxn” (knuckle of veal)
at the:
Haxnbauer am Platzl / Haxnbauerstuben
Münzstraße 8/Sparkassenstraße, 80333 München
and for one of the best “Kaiserschmarrn” visit:
Weisses Brauhaus
Tal 7, 80331 München
This is just a small selection of traditional restaurants centrally
located near the Marienplatz in the city centre. Just
give them a call if you want to reserve a table. If
you visit without booking, please remember that tables labelled
“Stammtisch” are reserved for regulars. Many
other delightful restaurants are just waiting for you to discover
them.
