the whole Society of 14 November 1980, formally setting up the <strong>Jesuit</strong><br />

<strong>Refugee</strong> <strong>Service</strong> in the Curia as part of the Social Secretariat.<br />

So after that letter we tried to start. Initially there was a fair<br />

amount of opposition in the Curia. Some believed the Curia should<br />

not get involved in direct work, but rather should be the place to<br />

co-ordinate works and projects. There was some questioning by<br />

some of the Assistants. No channels existed, so I initially saw Fr<br />

Arrupe once each week to report on developments, though this<br />

eventually led to meetings only once a month.<br />

We responded to certain problems, as we were able. One was<br />

helping a young Italian <strong>Jesuit</strong> working with Bishop Gasparini. Another<br />

was helping to prepare an address which Fr Arrupe gave at a<br />

meeting of African bishops.<br />

Structural changes<br />

I will stop here for the rest is history. The work of JRS expanded<br />

rapidly and began to occupy so much time that I was obliged to<br />

ask Fr Dieter Scholz to come and share the load. After Fr Arrupe’s<br />

stroke, Fr Dezza continued to support it without wishing to make<br />

any structural changes. But, as soon as I left the Curia in 1984, Fr<br />

Kolvenbach separated the JRS from the Social Secretariat and Fr<br />

Scholz became its first independent director.<br />
