No. 51.<br />

North Side Colliery.— Edward Miller, Operator.<br />

This colliery is located on north sids of Short Mountain, in Lykens<br />

Valley, 3 miles west of Gratztown, on lands of Summit Branch Railroad<br />

and Lykens Valley <strong>Coal</strong> Companies, and is a small operation on the Lykens<br />

Valley vein. Its sales are made to farmers principally, giving employment<br />

to 13 men in the winter months. Shipments yearly, about 1,500<br />

tons; drift 700 yards long.<br />

No. 52. Big Run Gap Colliery.— James Fennell. Operator,<br />

This colliery is situated in Williams Valley, in Short Mountain, on Ian Is<br />

of Summit Branch Railroad Company and Lykens Valley <strong>Coal</strong> Company,<br />

2 miles west of Wiconisco. 2 drift openings on Lykens Valley vein 10<br />

feet thick ; is a land sale operation, giving employment to 12 men. Yearly<br />

amount of coal mined, 1,000 tons ;<br />

700 yards of gangway- opened.<br />

No. 53. Lincoln Colliery.— Levi Miller & Co., Operators.<br />

This colliery is situated on the south s*ide of Broad Mountain, 4 miles<br />

west of Tremont, on the lands of the Philadelphia and Reading <strong>Coal</strong> and<br />

Iron Company. It consists of one tunnel driven north 387 yards, cutting<br />

Lykens Valley vein No. 2, south dip, 5 feet thick. An east gangway 25°<br />

has been opened 1,100 yards, 72 breasts have been opened and 16 now<br />

working. A west 35° gangway opened 1,100 yards, 74 breasts have been<br />

opened and 10 working, with a strong rock top, making it one of the safest<br />

collieries in this district.<br />

Ventilation.—An air-hole is open on each gangway, with a furnace in<br />

each producing ample ventilation through the entire mine.<br />

One 40-horse power engine runs the breaker ; 3 boilers of 30 inches by<br />

30 feet long, and in good condition, furnish steam for the above engine,<br />

which is all the machinery used. Monthly shipments 7,000 tons. 45<br />

wagons, 20 mules and 16 horses. 3,200 yards of track laid. 117 men and<br />

15 boys employed in the colliery. v<br />

No. 54.<br />

Kalmia Colliery.— Phillips & Kheafer, Operators.<br />

This colliery is situated in Schuylkill county, on the lands of the Philadelphia<br />

and Reading <strong>Coal</strong> and Iron Company, (late Fishing Creek esttte,)<br />

and 8 miles west of Tremont, in Williams Valley. It consists of one<br />

tunnel opening 175 yards, cutting Lykens Valley vein 9 feet thick on south<br />

dip, angle 66°.<br />
