is sunk to the bottom of the basin, and works both pitches. The coal is<br />
good and strong, but that on the east and west side is faulty. This work<br />
is well ventilated by exhaust steam from pumps. Average air 12,000 cubic,<br />
feet per minute. A new slope is being sunk, and the building of a new<br />
breaker, which is not in operation yet.<br />
Machinery consists of 3 hoisting engines, 2 breaker engines, 1 pumping<br />
engine, 2 steam pumps and 13 boilers, in good order.<br />

Colliery No. 10, Harleigh, Luzerne county.— Landowners, Big Black<br />
Greek Improving Company.— Operators, Harleigh Goal Company.<br />
No. 1 slope, south dip, 461 feet long, 155 feet vertical. The coal worked<br />
is the Big vein ;<br />
thickness 27 feet. The ventilation is good; the amount<br />
of air is about 7,000 cubic feet per minute. There is also in No. 1 slope<br />
an inside slope of about 80 yards in length, hoisting the coal to the bottom<br />
of No. 1. The hoisting engine and steam pumps are supplied with steam<br />
from the surface.<br />
Slope No. 2. This is a pumping slope to drain the surface water oft' No. 1.<br />
Slope No. 3, south dip, 609 feet long, 297 feet vertical. The coal worked<br />
is the Big vein ; average thickness 27 feet. This slope works the coal below<br />
No. 1<br />
; is a lift deeper in the basin. In No. 3 there is also an inside<br />
r<br />
slope to the bottom of the basin, about 100 } ards in length. No gangways<br />
are going on at present, owing to their being to the boundary.<br />
Machinery consists of 4 hoisting engines, 155-horse power ; 2 breaker<br />
engines, 60-horse power ; 1 pumping engine, 80-horse power ;<br />
6 steam pumps,<br />
180-horse power; total engines^ 13, of 475-horse power.<br />

Slope No. 1, north dip, 489 feet long, 297 feet vertical.<br />
Slope No. 2, south dip, 360 feet long, 297 feet vertical.<br />
The coal worked<br />
is the Big vein ;<br />
thickness 27 feet. Both slopes are down to' basin and connected<br />
with each other by a gangway driven across the basin, yet the workings<br />
are separated, but much better ventilated. The air in both slopes is<br />
good.<br />
The amount of air passing through the mines is about 20,000 cubicfeet<br />
per minute. In No. 1 counter is open to work the cross on No. 1 side<br />
of the basin, so that the bottom of the basin is worked by No. 2 alone.<br />
Machinery consists of 2 hoisting engines, 2 breaker engines, several large<br />
pumps, and 22 boilers, in good order.<br />
