90 yards from bottom of slope ; tinwagon<br />

shunted the track, breaking<br />

the said ring and precipitating 13 men<br />

to the bottom, killing 3 men and injuring.<br />

Three hundred and seventy-nine persons were maimed and injured during<br />

the year, 34 of whom died subsequently of such injuries, and many others<br />

are still suffering and their recover}' doubtful, and others that are crippled<br />

for life.<br />

The causes of these casualties are such,<br />

That 77 persons had been sev-erely burned by explosions of fire-damp.<br />

4 persons had been kicked by vicious mules.<br />

15 persons had been crushed and run over by wagons.<br />

13 persons had been burned by explosions of powder.<br />

2(> persons had been injured by explosions of blasts.<br />

11 persons had been injured by falls of shite.<br />

11 persons had been injured by breaking of slope chains.<br />

1 person had been injured by explosion of a boiler.<br />

73 persons had been injured by falls of coal.<br />

b' persons had been injured by falls of sundry characters.<br />

34 persons had been mortally injured and died subsequent^.<br />

12 persons had been injured by falls into rolls, screens and wheels.<br />

And in; persons had been seriously injured otherwise.<br />

379 casualties occurred during the year, against<br />

265 in the year 1872, being an excess of<br />

114 casualties in <strong>1873</strong>.
