energy and environmental issues have been
front and centre for IVA ever since the Academy
was founded in 1919, and they remain so
today. The energy supply issue will be a critical
one for both Sweden and the rest of the world
for the foreseeable future. Numerous environmental
challenges need to be dealt with and
there are still many problems to solve. IVA can
help find solutions in various ways; for example,
by assembling players who can influence
development in this area.
During the year the Academy arranged activities
directly linked to environmental and energy
issues. The Environmental Foresight project delivered
its conclusions and ideas at a breakfast
meeting attended by Minister for the Environment,
Andreas Carlgren. The Energy Crossroads
project, aimed at developing strategies for
Sweden’s energy systems in a new climatic
situation, was launched in September. A joint
programme of IVA and the Chinese Academy
of Engineering (CAE) for renewable energy
research exchange has provided opportunities
for a number of exchanges between Sweden
and China. The Academy’s divisions have also
arranged meetings and open seminars focusing
on energy and the environment.
