distinctions, scholarships and awards professor torvard c. laurent, one of sweden’s leading biophysical chemists, received the 2008 great gold medal for his hyaluronan research. Professor laurant has published 230 scientific articles in international journals. his research involves “understanding the environment in which cells live,” i.e. pure basic research. his research has had unexpected practical significance, for example in cataract operations. Today 70,000 such procedures are carried out in sweden alone every year. he is most proud of the success of his younger colleagues. in the 1970s he convinced the swedish medical Research council to introduce recruitment services for young researchers. he is still in contact with many of them today. he is driven by the excitement of unexpected discoveries in research. Acquiring new knowledge is something he particularly enjoys. Torvald c. laurent is also an important figure in both swedish and international rheumatology, and his lab has been an important link between research and medical practitioners. dr. carl bennet received an ivA gold medal in 2008 for his contributions as an entrepreneur and leader in industry with a leadership style characterised by imagination and responsibility. carl Bennet is driven by his interest in people, society and industrial development, which he says provide insight and knowledge. he believes that sweden has a clear advantage in the way we organise ourselves and work in a decentralised way. in line with his motto, “you cannot be better than your environment, that’s why it’s important to develop it,” he sees himself as a team player who thinks it’s rewarding to work with and be inspired by other people to achieve improvement. “good leadership is recognising potential in others and having good judgement. This generates energy and promotes balance,” says carl Bennet. professor sten bergström received an ivA gold medal in 2008 for his considerable contribution to hydrologic engineering and hydrologic modelling. The discovery of the link between weather and water, i.e. predicting how much water is running through a watercourse, is the most important result of his research. The technique is used by the hydroelectric power industry and the swedish meteorological and hydrological institute (smhi). sten Bergström’s main driving force has always been working with information that will benefit society. his motto is: “Ruining the future for our children is altogether too cheap.” Relating to various climatic and vulnerability perspectives, his research is of great significance nationally and internationally. “water circulation is the earth’s bloodstream. it’s greatly affected by climate change. The climate is also a major lifestyle issue. we need to reduce emissions while adapting to a changed climate,” says sten Bergström. science journalist dr. annagreta dyring received an ivA gold medal in 2008 for her outstanding informative writing on research and popular science. her motto is: “The serious and the enjoyable belong together,” and she regards her achievements as a service to democracy, which is also what drives her. “i see myself as a person who wants to build bridges between the community of experts and ordinary people. it would be a disaster if that connection were severed. i have trained and encouraged researchers to express themselves in everyday language about their areas of expertise to inspire and entertain,” says Annagreta dyring. 34

The money will allow the recipients to study and conduct research at top universities around the world. The fund was established in 1990 by ericsson and electrolux to honour hans werthén’s Professor of human ecology was awarded John and Margaretha Aspegren Scholarship emin Tengström, professor of human ecology, was awarded the scholarship for his great commitment to interdisciplinary issues relating to the development of society. The john and margaretha Aspegren memorial foundation is based on a donation from john Aspegren and his wife margaretha. The purpose is to promote greater understanding between engineering sciences and the humanities. A scholarship of sek 100,000 is awarded alternate years to an engineer and a humanist. achievements and is administered by ivA which also selects the recipients. The recipients must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in engineering/natural sciences or economics/ law/behavioural science, and preferably have conducted research or gained industry work experience over a number of years. winners of the 2008 carl mannerfelt Prize was Rikard eduards, marcus fransson, Torsten mattsson, nils nilsson and Bengt steneby. 35 ester herlin-kernell, winner of the 2008 scholarship. Carl Mannerfelt Prize for solar technology An invention that enables sunlight to power indoor light fittings with the help of fibre optics won the 2008 carl mannerfelt Prize. The Prize is awarded by ivA in cooperation with the world wildlife fund and the confederation of swedish enterprise. The 2008 recipients were three engineers and two architects from the green technology company Parans solar lighting. The winning technology has already been installed in some fifty buildings around the world. Medical entrepreneur centre receives support from the Sten Gustafsson Foundation A new medical entrepreneurship centre at the university of gothenburg and an intellectual property rights office received grants from the sten gustafsson foundation in 2008. The foundation was established by Astra and is administered by ivA. The grants go to Thomas hedner for setting up the medical centre and to Peter A. jörgensen for establishing the iPR office through the swedish inventors’ Association.
