internet & it: internet foresight gives sweden a platform to take the lead iva’s internet foresight project was concluded in 2008. The aim of the project was for sweden to be a leading internet nation in 2015. The project showed that sweden has what it takes to lead the field in development but that we need to invest more resources to seize that role. “in terms of broadband use and access, we are already one of the leading nations,” said project chairman jan uddenfeldt at the concluding conference. “But today we are not driving development.” work on internet foresight was carried out by highly qualified panels, each focusing on a key perspective: user, infrastructure, and security and legal. The panel members were representatives from sweden’s leading companies, organisations and research centres working in the field. during the spring of 2008 all three panels presented their final reports. The project held a concluding conference on 10 April 2008 attended by minister for communications åsa Torstensson, who had the opportunity to react to the project proposals. one of the messages conveyed by the project was that targeted investment in infrastructure is needed to accommodate a flourishing range of services. in 2015 this structure should be open and exposed to competition. users should be able to access all services regardless of which equipment or carrier network they are using. At the same time, users should be able to take internet security for granted, and this requires robust infrastructure and secure systems for all types of services. one advantage sweden has as an aspiring leading internet nation is that we already hold a strong position in mobile telephony. According to jan uddenfeldt, the wireless internet will dominate the future. “development will be driven by small entrepreneurial businesses. That’s why it’s important for these to receive development support, particularly in the form of seed capital. we also need to simplify the rules for overseas experts who want to work in sweden.” scorecard.se low interest in iT a problem! interest in it education is low – this has been known for some time, especially within ivA’s scorecard project. At the 2008 Annual meeting, several participants talked about the problems with the way iT education is marketed. The high level of interest in using iT is well documented, but education programmes are described in technocratic terms giving the impression that they lead to narrow programming jobs. “we need to show that iT jobs are about working with users,” said Annemarie fransson, director at the industry organisation iT&Telekomföretagen at Almega and member of the scorecard steering committee. young women in particular say they want to work with people, which is precisely what iT is all about; meeting people’s needs with the help of information technology. iT also offers opportunities to work in a global workplace. other changes needed are improving knowledge among career guidance counselors and making the structure of education programmes easier to understand. 40 minister for communications åsa Torstensson participated and commented on the proposals from the internet foresight project. The minister also attended the scorecard’s annual meeting. iT and the internet should be part of the curriculum in schools; not only to improve iT knowledge, but also to make better use of the teaching and learning benefits these tools offer in all instruction. sweden should invest in both research and education in new teaching methods. new ideas, such as “computer studies” and “the digital ladder,” were established. The word “ambient” is often used to describe quiet music or background lighting, and that is how the the development of mobile telephony is one of sweden’s greatest industrial success stories in modern times, in terms of sales, employment and export revenues. in september ivA arranged a seminar to highlight a study of mobile telephony develop ment in sweden and to show how the success can be linked to publicly financed research. The study, conducted by 41 Ambient Sweden internetframsyn ur ett användarperspektiv internet will work in the future according to the people who headed ivA’s internet foresight project. The internet will be a resource that is constantly available and we will regard it in a similar way to elec- Technopolis, is based on an extensive body of material, including interviews with 70 people who played a crucial role in the development. The results show that public financing of research and development in sweden is part of the reason for the enormous success of ericsson and the swedish mobile telephony industry.
