ABCD Transport Connections Pilot Project Department of Human Services Transport Connections Program Government July 2006 Name of Initiative Description of initiative Target Group Youth transport survey Melbourne medical transport assistance program (CT) Aboriginal driver education project pilot Transport advocacy The Let’s GET Connected project undertook a number of youth focus groups and transport surveys as part of mapping transport disadvantage and to identify possible transport solutions for young people. Local Health services and hospital social workers have been engaged to arrange volunteer assisted travel to get people from home to their nearest train station or V/Line bus stop; lodge a Red Cross Referral Form with the additional transport assistance required by passenger. Upon arriving in Melbourne a Red Cross will car pick the person up outside the Southern Cross Railway Station ensuring safe arrival and transfer to their Melbourne destination. Obtaining a drivers license was a huge barrier for indigenous people, therefore Learner Driver Project, modelled on a similar NSW program would be investigated. The program will consist of volunteer driving instructors, access to comprehensive insured vehicles, culturally appropriate car rallies, driver testing strategies, assistance with legal issues, appropriate training software programs and financial management The establishment of local community Working Groups across the two Shires and the Gippsland HACC Transport Provider networks (Gippsland wide) has proven that some transport hurdles are not ‘too hard’ to overcome. The project is successfully promoting a ‘we can’ attitude, which is indicating cultural changes among individuals, operators, State Government and organisations. The brochure provides a listing of townships and where the disability parking bays are located; information on parking permit eligibility and how to apply for a disability-parking permit for individuals and organisations. Let’s GET Connected project engaged Bemm River community to ascertain the need to access transport to Orbost through meetings and surveys. Once the need was established Orbost Secondary College School Bus Coordinator, Gippsland Department of Education and Training (DET) and Department of Infrastructure were approached to get an agreement to enable a trial for Bemm River community to access the school bus into Orbost. Let’s GET Connected initiated discussions with Melbourne Red Cross and lobbied on behalf of the region for a Red Cross patient transport program. Red Cross agreed that there was a service gap and were engaged to meet with local health transport providers and health services in East Gippsland to discuss the proposal. Following this Red Cross gave a commitment to source funding for two vehicles and to set up a patient transport service on the condition that Bairnsdale Regional Hospital partner with Red Cross by housing and auspicing the proposed patient transport service.
